home made posi trac?
hey guys, this may sound dumb, but is it possible to convert my truck to a posi trac by just welding some of the stuff inside it solid? i saw an episode of extreme 4x4 a long time ago where they did that, but i have no idea what type of diff they had.
i thought it was worth a shot though as theres a welder about 15 feet from my truck at the moment....

By welding the spiders you will loose out on the streetablilty of the truck. It is ment only for dragstrip and Offroad use only. On the street it is tuff turning the vechicle with out braking one tire loose.
For a streetable locker there are several to choose from. ARB (Selectable air locker), Lockright (automatic locker), LSD (Limited Slip Differential).

I have a lockright No Slip in my truck. It is great! I love the traction I get offroad!
The way Xtreem 4x4 did was for an axle without c-clips, and ruins the case. Here is a quick pic of prety much what they did.
This is what you should do. Weld all 4 gears, inbetween each tooth. Leave parralles teeth unwelded. I welded up my spiders like this for my Dragster TA. It has handled the abuse so far. And this will alow you to dissasimble the setup if you want to change an axle out or anything.
LOL I guess its perfect timing. The newest edition of Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road They wrote up an artical about welding spiders.
I'm going to post this under the FAQ2 for anyone to refer back to.

you are the man! thanks! im not too worried about street driving, my uncles chevelle does ok around corners with a posi. (he used to drag race it some before he got a real race car). im mainly concearned with not spinning one wheel while the hot shot in the import drives away. plus the advantage you get off road

good to know. i was under the impression that a posi ment both were solid together... like the welded units. so ill be making a spool then i prefer to get shoved back into the seat instead of spinning one tire so im sure i will like it. plus it wouldnt hurt to have it that way just incase i ever want to try it at the track to see what kind of et it will pull off

I welded up my first two diff. in my dakota and I ran them until I bought the R/T rear diff. I did not have any problems until tight turning in a parking lot. Of course, i have a large cam and 3" exhaust times 2... Not the best for hearing what is going on with the tires. However, both back tires wire spinning all the way through 3rd gear.

i considered welding my spiders when i stripped a few teeth off of each one the first day i had my 93 w/ a 5.2,2wd,and a 518 trans, but i then found out how much faster i would go through tires as if i dont go throught them fast enough already. but i was also wondering what kind of rearend is in my truck i was told its a dana 35 which only had an open diff and i got an axle ***. from a junkyard for 200 and they told me it was a factory lsd out of a 92 3.9 kota, but i find that hard to beleive what i do know is that its a 3.90 gear though rather then my factory 3.50
