Default Vehicle Speed Sensor

so i was looking into my vehicle speed sensor code from my truck, aaannnddd, theres no part on summit for the 1993. i know it has one, other wise it wouldnt have given me the code right? now, if i bought one for a '94, will it work in mine? i would assume so, but everytime ive said that on here, ive been wrong. and a question i have is, where is it this sensor located anyway? ive never seen it, nor even heard of it until not to long ago...

Does your truck have ABS? Apparently, according to the FSM, the ABS has its own speed sensors, so it might not be speedometer speed sensor.

Your year truck should have a cable driven speedometer, not the electronic speedometer that they switched to in '94. But just for future reference, the speedometer speed sensor is located in the back of your transmission sticking out of the overdrive unit (2wd) or in the transfer case (4wd).

Well, the speed sensor is a 3 pronged plug according to the parts manual, but according to Allpar.com, the pre-'94 dakotas had cable driven speedometers, so I don't know in your case. I suppose if yours was a late '93 they could have already done the switch. What is your truck's exact manufacture date?

I'm not very familiar with speedometer cables, but that sure looks like one to me. As for the harness, it does not look like the picture given in the parts manual. So I would say you have a cable driven speedometer, which means your computer should not be programmed to know what to do with a speedometer speed sensor (which answers my computer compatibility question from a couple weeks ago... if I went with the '92-'93 manual transmission MP computer, I might not have a speedometer) which also tells me your computer shouldn't have thrown the code.

That leads me back to my other question.... does your truck have ABS?

I should have asked this earlier, what was the numerical code it gave you?

Just curious.

My best guess as to what it could be is the rear speed sensor for the ABS, but I would think that that would trigger your ABS light, and I'm at a loss for any other suggestions. Maybe someone else will have a better answer for you.
