When dealing with R-134a, you should wear safety glasses (preferably chemical safety goggles) and leather gloves.
As far as breathing in the vapors, as long as your using it in a well ventilated area, you shouldn't have a problem. If you were to experience problems, it would be like asphyxiation, loss of coordination, etc. (This found via the MSDS)

As a side note: using safety goggles and gloves (leather and nitrile as needed) should be common practice for everyone. It's extremely easy. (Plus, they can't replace your eyes)
