Help a noob Please
Ok guys. I have a 93 dakota that I love. I got it for nothing(litterally), and have done some decent work to it so far. New water pump, radiator, tune up, serp belt....various small things.
I hit a huge bump. My transfer case was making some wicked noises, so I pulled it and got some bad news. Seems my chain slipped off and took half my housing with it when it went. I think most of my internals are fine, even the tabs on my shift forks. But I cant find the back half of the housing I need around here. The only one I did find was half the price of a brand new case. We dont have any pick and pulls in the area, and yards want 550 for a used case Id proabably have to rebuild anyway.
Does anyone happen to have the rear case from an NP231D sitting around? I dont need the extention cones, just the rear half itself. I can provide pics if needed.

We are talking transfer case only not tranny right? SOOOO, if it is the transfer case, it is not unheard of to have the chain loosen and blow the case up. See link below.

Might be easier to buy a new transfer case as a whole. And I would say you will need to replace the insides also, especially the chain, because there is a good chance when you hit the bump it just sped up the process of the case exploding (edit because it might not explode, just split apart) on you. It may have been just waiting to happen.

Ive been haunting all the local(within 400 miles) craigslists ads and have only come across one dodge, and it was a 2wd.

Crazy, maybe you can add your thoughts on this, but I don't think you need to be limiting yourself to Dodges, especially not just Dakotas. A 231 from a Ram, and even a 231 from some Jeeps should fit. I will look up the years they modified it but it has remained pretty unchanged acrossed many years.
You can also look into other transfer cases such as a 241, I believe this is a direct bolt up but woudln't mind having somone who knows more chime in.
Basically, do some research and you will make your hunt a lot less painful.
Jeep guys have them all over, I would even suggest checking a couple offroad forums for listings too.

I know the 231 was in just about every jeep known to man. From what Im told the 231 has 11 different rear case halves, basically the only difference being the oil pickup location. Aparently 5 of the 11 will work with my front half, but the guy will only tell me if I pay him 800 bucks for a rebuilt case.......obviously making me not want to do any buisiness with him at all. All the places I can order one from online only show the back of the case housing, not really helping with the oil pickup location.
Jeeps supposedly also have a different input shaft spline count, either 21 or 23, and are reportedly not as heavy of a case. I think the jeep chain is narrower than the one dodge uses.
Im also told that the case for the 93 is year specific, although I cant find any information that tells me what is specific about it.
Im definitely open to any ideas anyone has about how to do this less expensive than the stuff Im finding. If I could pull a jeep case and use my guts and buy a new chain and oil pump(mine clogged with aluminum shavings and fried) I would be happy doing so.

I will check when I get home, but if the output shafts were the same he could maybe get away with using the yokes he already has. I will download some specs for the different versions of the 231 cases out there. Advantage to getting a whole transfer case would be that you could use the chain and stuff from the new one.

Update from the dodge dealer
Aparently my rear case half is from a 93-2002 dodge, and will interchange. The case is supposed to be a shift on the fly NON synchro(which makes no sense to me). The rear case half is supposed to still be available new for 184. So its getting mildly cheaper. Im thinking Ill be 4-500 into this case by the time Im done rebuilding it. At least Ill know what Ive got versus buying a used junk yard unit and hoping its good.
