Im getting pretty serious about getting a 318 and i was wondering what is needed for it to run and be capable with my trucks system
Like possibly am im goin to need the 318s altenater or use my 3.9s altinater?,Is there going to be any power difference in usage with everything?,
Could i use my 3.9s Carburater with the 318 without losing too much power and possibly gaining some MPG?
Am i going to beable to put my engines outside equipment on the 318 like A/C compresser, power steering pump esc. . . . .
And anything else that could possibly change that should or would need to be switched

look in the faq for compatibility, they should all bolt up if you use an LA style 318/360. do not put a v6 carb on a v8, that would be super homo. get a holly

The faq's dont have much for or about the 87 Dakota's and the engine id be putting would be an LA style one and the Carb on my 3.9 is a Holly and i dont see why it wouldnt work, its a 2 barrel and ive already heard of V8s having 1 barrel carbs,
i want to know though if id lose any power if i put my carb from the 3.9 on it and/or if i would gain any MPG and it would only be temporary and
if anyone knows anything about what im lookin for post an anser but read my first post in the thread to find more out about what info im lookin for

If the accesory bracket mounts up from your 3.9 to the 318 I don't see why you need to change any of the equipment like the alternator and such.

An alternator is an alternator... it doesn't matter if there is a big block turning it or a lawnmower engine, it will put out the same current and voltage and require the same amount of horsepower to turn it. Just because your engine is smaller doesn't mean the rest of the truck needs less electricity to run lights, radio, etc., so they wouldn't put in a smaller one. I don't know much about the pre-magnum setup, but I know that ALL the accessories are the same between the magnum 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9, so there is no reason why the same wouldnt hold true for the pre-magnums.

And the reason FAQs does not have any info on this swap in an '87 is because Dodge did not offer the 318 in the Dakota until '91, and in order to make the 318 fit you are going to have to use a pusher fan mounted in front of the radiator to clear up space. The engine bay on the pre-'91s are shorter.

Yeah, thats what I meant.

My best advice to you is research the '89 Shelby Dakota. Carol Shelby put 318s into 1500 '89 Dakotas, so you should be able to find all your answers there.
