Here is a vauge walkthrough

http://www.ehow.com/how_4828441_repl...ge-dakota.html

from the autozone picture the bolts look like they would be up high enough you should be able to get to them. Hard to tell without being able to see the truck though.
that doesnt seem as hard as it looks in person. thats a bonus. but thank you for the walkthrough!

Here is a how-to. Unfortunately, the pictures no longer work (I'll try to upload new pictures soon), but the wording should be good enough. As I said in the how-to, it helps to disconnect the steering shaft (going from the firewall to the steering gear box, you only need to disconnect it at the firewall).

to completely rule out your battery, hook up jumper cables from another car that is running and then try to start the truck. if it still clicks the problem is after the battery.

mines a 2WD tho. im pretty sure im getting a new starter today (a friend is gunna borrow me the money..) and from looking at it, and reading the walkthrough that sksyhark186 posted, i should be able to figure it out without too many issues. and then maybe, if its needed, i will write up how to do it on a 2WD. thanx anyway tho

posted this in another thread, but posting it in a newer thread. I am trying to take my shaft apart to replace the starter. It has moderate rust, but no serious decay. I removed the bolt and spring clip in the middle of the shaft but cannot get it to slide forward. I tried lubricant, tapping it with a hammer in the hole, but cannot get it to budge. HELP, any suggestions. 1990 Dakota convertible.
