Default Sticky Rear End?

hey guys. I've noticed lately that when i pull it out of 4-wheel drive, the rear end stays locked for a while. But it locks up so bad that its kinda hard to get the clutch out without stalling after taking it out of 4x4. What is caused by this?

I will be putting a new gasker in the diff cover in about 5 weeks when i take mechanics class in school. I'll be able to take a look at it then. Unless my dad wants to do it earlier.

Thanks in advance,

Kaleb

It sounds more like a transfer case issue than a rear axle issue. The transfer case has nothing to do with the rear axle. What makes you think the rear axle is "locking" and what do you mean by locking? Is it binding up and won't move?

it will move, but its like the parking brake is partially engaged, but it isnt. Once when ti was doing it, i put it in neutral and got out and tried pushing it and it wouldnt budge.

but yea, its like the parking break is half on. The once i get up to a certain speed, it slowly eases off and goes back to normal.

Next time it does it, put both the transmission and transfer case in neutral and see if it moves. I can't think of a single reason why a rear axle would behave that way... I still think its a transfer case issue.

could it be the rear differential? If it is that would also affect the transfer case.

The point I'm trying to make is shifting the transfer case has no effects on the rear axle. They aren't linked by anything but the driveshaft. The rear axle is just along for the ride. If the problem only occurs while shifting the transfer case, its has to be a transfer case issue, cause a rear axle issue would happen all the time.

Unless he is confusing the harshness of 4wd. When engaged into 4wd the front axle has a little harsh feeling to it, especially while turning. The feeling is double when in low range.

Actually a little more than double... about 2.72x to be exact :P

Just messin with ya Crazy!

But seriously though... his description was "it felt like the parking brake was on" so I doubt its the harshness of 4x4 that he is talking about. I honestly think its a problem with the shift fork in the t case sticking and not getting the correct gears all the way meshed. I got to see how all that worked when I tore those two transfer cases apart.

it doesnt do it at all when its in 4x4. It works perfect in 4x4. Its just when i pull it out if 4-wheel, it seems to "stick".

Were probly gunna take it for a drive tmrrw (i dont have my license yet, friday i will though) and i'll get some opinions from my dad and maybe a mechanic. Thanks for the help guys.

Could it maybe be a low transfer case oil level? I am completely stumped. But i'll try what you said 318SLT.

well i just went out. tried what you said 318SLT. Put both the transfer case and transmission in neutral, got out and tried pushing. It wouldnt budge, like it did before.

Well, my dads frend was over to fix our Harley and he suggested that it might be one of those transfer cases that you have to go in reverse for 10 ft. or so do disengage. i tried that and it almost worked. Its still a little "sticky" after backing up about 15 ft. Then when back in 1st gear, it still stick slightly, til about 10 KM/h then it ges back to normal.

After that being said, any other suggestions?
