How would one id a factory LSD rear-end? Just curious, since I'm only 2WD, but just not fond of dog-legging it...

The best way to do is lift both rear tires up and spin one tire by hand and see how the other tire reacts. If it spins the opposite way it is a normal open diff. If it spins the same direction it is a LSD or a locker. You may be able to buy some from walmart. They sell units for the bicycles. Maybe the units jogers use have speed on them too.

I have the LSD and I will say that I like it but hate it when you take a sharp turn and hit the gas with a cop around. You get bad looks from the cop because your tires chirped.

Most trucks came with the 8.25. I believe most 7.25's came on 4clys. All 8.25's have the 27 splines (1st Gen only). As for the LSD it was an option on all Dakotas. No way to tell from the engine/ model type.

i didnt read all that.. i'd be willing to bet IF you dont pull anything or put a heavy amount of weight in the back of your truck. you could weld it and it wouldnt ever do anything negative...

1st Gen is 87-96. Yes there is an easy way. Check to see what the diff cover looks like. If oval it is 8.25. If octagon it is 7.25. Check out this site if you need to see them. http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffList.a...=Diff&TypeID=2
