95 dak 3.9 auto 4wd 1st gear whine, 34k miles
I have a 1995 auto 4wd dak, with only 34k miles. Is it normal to have a whine in first gear?
and yes, in case you're questioning it, I do have only 34,000 miles on it. There is absolutely no whine in any other gear. I should say that the whine isn't really loud. I only hear it if I'm driving without the blower or radio on. Its almost like the same kind of whine you hear when in reverse in a manual trans vehicle, except much quieter.
I had a trans flush done when I got it about 3000 miles ago(full flush, not just drain and refill). The new fluid is the BG fully synthetic trans fluid.
It has not been used for towing, and I bought it from my grandfather, who drove it like a grandfather..

Was this BG fully synthetic trans fluid ATF+4? Cause these transmissions aren't to be ran on anything but ATF+4.

Here is that list of licensed and tested fluids:

The Center for Quality Assurance, which Chrysler uses to run its ATF+4 licensing program, wrote: “The previous MOPAR ATF+3® formulation was discontinued in 2005 and ATF+4® is recommended for all transmissions filled with ATF+3®.”
Several companies now sell "universal" fluids. If they state that they are compatible with ATF+4®, they may work well, especially for those unsure of which fluid to use. The Center for Quality Assurance warned us to check the label for Chrysler’s license number, and to make sure the fluid is on their list of ATF+4® licensed and tested fluids.

according to this it 'meets or exceeds the performance requirements' of ATF+4

here is a product listing on bg's site

but i'm still wondering if a compatibility issue could cause just the one small symptom of first gear whining.. it shifts fine..

After reading that, it's hard to say if it's the fluid, but knowing how finiky the dodge automatic transmissions are, I'd be hesitant to use anything labled "universal". Maybe someone else will have better input.
i was hoping someone might have some personal experience using this fluid. I agree that a universal fluid doesn't sound like the best idea, but I got the fluid for free. I traded my carbon fiber motorcycle helmet(after i sold my bike) to a friend who is a technician for a trans flush and $50. He swore it was the best fluid ever; cue the gullibility..
The part that is confusing is: how can it have everything a dex/merc trans needs along with everything an atf+4 trans needs along with everything a honda trans needs???... without any problems??? Is it just part atf+4, part dex/merc, and part honda atf?
I think I'm gonna shoot an email to BG to get clarification on the product.
I'll post my email and their response(assuming I get one).
btw, 95 318slt, thanks for the help. You've been there every time I've had questions on here.

you want someone who has experience with tranny fluid you came to the fight place. i changed mine every 6 months for 8 years. my 89 dipstick says dexron II only and my tranny is basically the same as the later models that take atf+3 only.
I've used every fluid known to man and found the best (in a tranny that slips) is the wal-mart full synthetic. they stopped selling it here so i went to the semi-synthetic.
whatever you do do not use a high mileage tranny fluid, i put in valvoline high mileage and darn near blew it out in 2 weeks. the castrol atf+4 was also good but not the best and it was expensive. if you want something good and cheap stick to the wal-mart synthetics, its the only one i know of that is actually compatible with any tranny.
