Default HELP: Need to find a transmission

Looking for a new transmission for my 94 v6 Dakota 4x4, i have looked around in junkyards and it seems that this is a pretty hard transmission to find?

The truck i have now has 220,000 miles on it. i was cruising down the highway in 5th gear for about two hrs when the trans started whining then all of a sudden 5th gear let out so i put it in 4th, when i finally pulled over i found out that 4th gear was the ONLY gear i had. Not even reverse.

Please somebody help me! The truck runs excellent, it is also a southern truck so i dont really want to sell it.

Don't know if you tired www.craigslist.org or www.ebay.com or the classified section on this forum. Also you may want to put where you live so people will know if they live close to you. Have you thought about getting it rebuilt.

http://www.car-part.com is where I went to find the driver side knuckle and two upper control arms for my 96 4x4 here in FL. Good luck with your search.

Manual trans I am assuming since you said 5th and 4th gears? If so, it should be the AX-15 tranmission which shouldn't be too terrible to find, they were also used behind some Jeeps, just verify the bolt patterns are the same. The NV3500 would also bolt up if it was behind a magnum engine.

Ok great thanks guys, i tried the site listed above, i also tried craigslist and ebay, the cheapest i had really found is roughly 500 bux.

However i found a guy on craigslist not too far from me that is selling a NV3500 from a 93 chevy S10, it was off a 2wd engine. Will that work do you think?? if so i will buy it tomarow. Thanks for the help!

I wouldnt think it would matter if the trans came off a 2wd or 4wd right? it all depends on weather it will bolt to my transfer case or not right?

Also yes my old trans is a 5speed manual.

No a chevy transmission will not work. Different bolt patterns.

No a 2wd tranny will not work. Many transmissions have removable tail cones, the nv3500 does not. Thus, it would not bolt up to your transfer case. If it was off a dodge you could always use it as a 2wd transmission, but thats out too.

In short, that tranny will do you absolutely no good.

ok thanks, i just found a trans out of a v6 3.9 dakoda that will work perfect for 350.

A shop wanted 400 to put it in and take the old one out, how hard of a job would it be to just do it myself? i have all teh tools i need as well as a gargae at my house, i have put transmissions in hondas b4 but this is alot different.

Is this task worth trying on my own? is there a place i can find the procedures?

Not an overly difficult task. Remove the transfer case, remove the transmission, replace.

You can download the factory service manual from the faq. It has detailed walkthroughs of all of it.

There are several semi-descriptive walkthroughs I've typed out on here... just do a search for them. I've pulled the transmission on my truck a total of 4 times. Expect it to take 3-4 hours to get it out since this is the first time you've tried to pull it on this truck.
