Are you talking about the axle pinion shaft? If so then everything has to come out before you can take out the pinion. Check the FAQ for the service manual for a detailed instructions on it.

it's the pinion shaft in the rear differential that you need to remove to get the axles out

OHHHHH the centershaft bolt...
if its broken, your going to fight with it more getting it out rather than pulling and changing the entire axle section...you could use an angle drill and a easy out
but its a *****.

Mine had a nice groove worn in it from the spider gear, I just took a hammer and drift and beat it out..

yeah, but thats the center pin. if the lock bolt is still in there, its threaded into the other side of the carrier housing after it goes through the carrier, your not gettin that sucker out easy

When and if you can get the bolt out of the cross pin .You will need to mike the cross pin hole to see if it is oval .If you can find any difference ,toss the carrier. These newer carriers are softer than the old ones. This also happens in fwd trans. When the hole distorts it lets the pin move and shear the bolt. I have seen the pin slowly walk out and mill a grove in the transmition case. If it happens in a rear diff it is alot more violent .

I though you said the locking bolt came out as a whole (not broken)?

Broken cross pin bolts are a big problem in Ford rearends but I've worked on a lot and never managed to break one yet..
