Default 1994 Dakota Fan Clutch Removal 5.2

Has anyone just pulled the water pump, fan clutch, and shroud all at one time? I am out of ideas on the 36 MM nut on the hub! It is whipping my butt right now.

I am very open to any further ideas on getting the nut off the fan but also just want to know what the draw back are to just taking the water pump bolts out and pulling it all at one time. Is it even possible?

Thanks.

Several possible ways. Check this post. The link is also located in the FAQ2 in this section.

What methods have you tried to remove the nut? What I did to remove mine is I took two bolts and stuck them in the holes in the pulley, then wedged a pry bar between them and pushed on the prybar and wrench. It ended with a few busted knuckles, but it worked. Also, soak the nut in PB Blaster for a while but be sure to clean it off before starting the engine... don't want to lubricate the belt!

95, did you take two out and put longer ones in the wholes? I never thought of that. I have tried the "special tool" which is NOT that special. Sounds like a good idea....I will give it a try!

Oh, one other question just to be sure....this nut is reverse threaded right? So I should be Pulling it toward the Drivers side right? Sorry for such a lame question...it is getting late and the project is getting frustrating and I don't want to take any chances.

Thanks again!!

Well there aren't any bolts in it now... at least there weren't in mine. They are just holes in the pullys, not threaded or anything. I just grabbed two bolts and stuck them in to have something to pry against.

NO!!!!!!! Huge misconception that we've agured about on here many a times! The nut is standard thread.

That makes sense. Mine are threaded but the same principle applies. I'm not sure why they are threaded holes they really don't do anything but they are threaded...its crazy the variety of sh....stuff that comes out of Detroit!

It makes good sense on the threads....the Haynes manual says "counter clockwise" but then I read something on here that said they were reverse threads so I was very confused. Thanks VERY much for the advice.

Thanks.

95, that did it! Thanks a bunch for the advice. Now the next big challenge is the hose that goes up out of the top of the water pump. It is between the two top bolt holes and has a hose clamp on it. The new pump came with a threaded fitting that appears to be what the hose connects to. Where does that hose go? I am having a heck of a time getting it off of the pump and don't want to rip it or break it somewhere.

Thanks.

Awesome!! Glad it worked for you! It took me a while to think of it when I was trying to take it off.

Well there are a few hoses so you'll have to be more specific. Are you talking about the metal heater hose, or the short rubber bypass hose? The bypass hose is something you should replace no matter if its bad or not. Just cut it off!!! The heater hose is bolted to the accessory bracket and just fits down in the water pump with an o-ring to seal it. The pump should come with a new o-ring.

I got the metal heater hose new but this is just a hose that is on a fitting right between the two top bolts on the water pump. I can only see the end of it and the hose clamp that is on it. I can't really see where it goes. If it were the bypass hose you are talking about, where does the other end of it go?

Thanks again.
