Default Dakota manual tranny and transfer case

I have had his truck about 2 weeks now and I check the level in both the tranny and transfer case and they are a little low. The kid I bought it from said they both had Mobil 1 full sythetic in them. Do any of you guys know what kind I should use to top it off with? Or should I drain it all out and replace it? And what would I replace it with? The truck is a 93 club cab V6.

The '93 v6 manual transmission is the AX-15, which takes 75w-90 GL-5 gear oil. Thats the same stuff our differentials take.

The np231 transfer case takes ATF+4.

I don't know what you mean by mobile 1 full synthetic, cause mobile 1 has full synthetic gear oils, transmission fluids, etc. I sure hope you aren't talking about mobile 1 full synthetic motor oil though! If thats the case, they need to be flushed ASAP!

I would drain both and fill them up with new for peace of mind.

I am not sure on the Mobil 1 full synthetic. He just told me everything had been changed over to all synthetic. I do know that the transfer case has oil in it that is pink in color. The tail shaft seal was bad and when I popped the old one out some pink looking fluid drain out.

The transfer case oil is ATF which is red. Since its pink it sound like the input shaft is leaking and transmission gear oil is leaking in. Change out the seal and fluid in both of them.

Will be doing that soon since the transfer case blew up last night on the highway. Just need to find a t-case for it now.

I am wondering if I have a 93 t-case in it. I do know that the motor and some things have been changed in it before. And I just found out that the np231 is the only one offered in the 93. Is there some makings on the t-case I can look for to find out exactly what t-case I have in it?

There is a round plate on the back case half that should say what it is. The np231 was the only case offered on a Dakota from '88 to after '96 (i forgot the exact year they offered the AWD option).

This is the tag for my NP242. Yours should say NP231.

Yeah I found that and also found that 93 was the only year they put my transfer case in the Dakota its a np231d. I am being told that is the only one that will work in it. anything else will burn it up. And I think the difference in them is that the front drive shaft bolts on instead of slip in.

You got told very wrong. First of all, the NP231D was put in every 4x4 (not AWD) dakota from '88 to '00 (or whatever year they switched to the np233 electronically controlled transfer case). Second of all, there has never been a transfer case I've ever seen where the front driveshaft has a slip yoke on it. In fact, because of the angle of the front output shaft (~5-6 degrees up), it would be impractical (maybe even impossible) to run a slip yoke driveshaft! There needs to be that double cardan driveshaft to work with the driveline angles of the front.

A lot of people with short wheelbase, lifted 4x4s also have to run a double cardan rear driveshaft (because of the steep driveline angles) by getting a slip yoke eliminator for the rear output shaft.
