Default Smog Crap Removal?

I have the 88 Dakota 4x2 with the 3.9 6cyl. just wondering if any one has a link to a write up on the smog crap removal. ie the Air pump and all the other vaccume crap that goes along with it. Or am I going to be the first?
Thanks for the help

Back in the old days, 35 years ago, that was easy, But since the computer monitored and controlled stuff came along, it got very hard.....
I am doing it to an 89, but will be using a carburetor instead of fuel injection, so there will be no computer...

He's very right, it would be hard to do away with the "smog crap" being there's a computer in your vehicle with a vast network of signals running through it that gets info from all of your censors and vacuum lines, etc. A safer way to go would be to get a performance chip for your truck, it's a lot easier and more reliable then gutting out all the smog and emissions hardware and then trying to find some way to make your vehicle run correctly after-wards. This is all just a suggestion but if I was you and had the money, I would hit up a local Dodge dealership and see if they can hook you up with a good performance chip or tuner to suit your needs, just a suggestion.

I removed the air pump from my 1989 dakota. No codes. I just plugged up any vacuum lines that went to the pump if any did, I don't remember. There are really no good chips for the OBD-I trucks.

Oh right it's an '88, you shouldn't have too much trouble then removing the smog restriction hardware.

i thought it was going to be like that. plug the vaccume lines or run som "t" fittings if need be so keep a vacuume signal going to a sensor or what have you. we will see what happens I'll do a write up on it and shuch and see if theres a MPG difference.(fingers crossed)

The air pump stuff does clutter up the engine compartment a bit, but it uses so little horsepower that you won't notice a difference in performance.

Place your bets that there sounds like a challange
Air Pump vs no air pump. I think I try and take all that junk out of there after this tank of gas. so it will be (possibly) the first two tanks of gas with the air pump vs two tanks with out the air pump. Winners get att-a-boys

I get about 18mpg with mine driving around town, about a traffic light every mile. Mine is a Standard cab, short bed, 4x4, 5-speed. My Uncle took the air pump off so, I can't tell you if it made a difference. But I did take the mechanical fan off and put an electric one on and didn't notice a increase in MPG's.

Very few people actually, routinely, calculate their mileage. Many say, "I get X amount of miles per tank" and that is usually their around town mileage which can vary considerably. That is no way to measure.
That is why all the high mileage gadgets seem to work, people don't know what they actually get, they just guess.
I usually do it the first several months owning a new car, for a baseline. Then I recheck it about once a month afterwards. That way I know if something is going wrong, as the mileage will be down.
