Default Overdrive Issue/Governor Replacement

Got a 95 2WD. It keeps shifting out of overdrive? Any suggestions? Also, is there a write up on how to replace the transmission governor on a 42RH? Does the tranny need to be pulled?

Do you have any Codes? My guess a bad VSS Vechicle Speed Sensor. If needed check the FAQ in this section for a list of codes and how to read them without a code reader.
The Governor has nothing to do with the OD on your year.

+1 ^. OD on these trucks are electronically controlled, not hydraulic. You'd be looking at a sensor issue, like the vss, tps, or ect.

Thanks. I should have explained. The overdrive and governor are two seperate matters. I'm having an issue with the trans not shifting from 2nd to 3rd. This happens sporatically. I was told by a mechanic friend that it is probably the gorvernor. I guess there was a bulletin on this some time ago.

Ah ok. Thanks for clarifying. Yes, the lack of a 2-3 shift is definately a governor valve on its way out.

And now knowing what you just said, the two problems could be related. Fix the governor problem first and see if the overdrive problem clears itself up. If it doesn't, you should address it later.

Yeah sorry bout that. Any idea how to get to the governor? I've looked at the manuals. It looks as if it is internal.

It is internal... its located in the tailshaft I believe. I've never tried to take apart an automatic transmission, but I would assume the procedure is in the '95 Factory Service Manual we have available in this section's faq thread. If not, try the a500/a518 rebuild manual...

if your going to take it apart for the gov'nor then you might at well rebuild the thing for a fresh start. if you want i had a friend who got his A518 rebuilt for drag racing at Mayes performance for less than $700.
