Default HELP! I want to swap the tranny on my 94 Dakota 4x4

I bought a 1994 Dodge Dakota V6 4x4 a little while ago for dirt cheap knowing it had transmission problems. I want to swap out the transmission but no one can tell me what is compatible with what. The parts place told me it HAD to be a V6 and it HAD to be from 94 or 95. I've also heard that V8 trannys will work if (something about the torque converter). Does anyone actually know my options for putting a different tranny in? Please help. I've been trying to get this p.o.s. fixed for 2 months now.

A few people have done tranny swaps in the forum, is your truck a manual or an automatic?

Here is some info pulled from the FAQ:

yea it is AUTOMATIC. Can't believe I forgot to mention that. The belt for 2nd gear is broken. I pulled the pan and it was just lying there. It felt like cardboard, was thinner than most pizza boxes and brittle like those sugar candy cigarettes. It also stank like death. I have been hesitant to get an identical replacement tranny b/c every one I've talked to says they are garbage and just going to have similar problems. Also, it is a work truck so a $3k Jasper just isn't an option.

I did search around but couldn't find my situation exactly. I don't know any of the numbers/letters of my transmission.
