Best thing to do is get a 4wd. Ya I know that is not the answer you want. Or just get mud tires, and a rear locker.

Tips
Lower tire air pressure.
Keep your momentum.
Go straight, turns can slow you down.
Use sandbags or anything with weight to weigh down the bed to aid traction.
Tire chains can help too.
Make sure your air intake hose will not get blasted with water/mud.
Lifting the truck can help too. Check the FAQ2 for info.
Keep a tow strap/ shovel just incase.
Take a camera!!!!

Most importantly don't go alone. Another truck will aid if trouble arises.

don't get stuck! i was mudding a few hours ago and my friend(who was driving my truck) slammed the breaks before we fell into a 3ft mud puddle and we all got out and had to push. unfortunately i was the only one who fell in.

and know the trail before hand. take a walk down it or go with someone else before you drive down it. it will help in know what lies ahead so you can avoid getting stuck.

+1 on everything crazy said.

mud grip tires make a huge difference over street and all-terrains.
a shovel can get you out of a lot of places, by removing the ridge behind your tires.
always go with a buddy and a strap or chain.
and always let someone know where you went, in case you don't come back.
i also carry a come-along and a couple of 50ft 1/4in cables.

Stay on the pavement, it's a lot cheaper. Swimming lessons are mandatory if you venture off road.

make sure its legal to do so. i just got back from being arrested because my dad told me about an area to go offroading and it turned out to be a park preserve and the sad thing was my brothers friends where just leaving when we got there. now i'm with out a truck and am out 600+ dollars. luckily not having any prior arrests the sherrif un-arrested me and my friend. its not really worth it unless its legal to do so
