Default Powers up, turn key, no start/crank

Forum,

How goes it? I've been absent for a bit due to a busy work schedule and getting signed up for some building classes at the college. I'm back working on the truck today. I finally finished my spark plugs and oil and PCV etc and im glad to be finished with that.

We went to start the truck today and check a few things out, how it was idling and such and noticed that when trying to start the truck the starter doesnt try to fire at all. I do know that when the truck was purchased the Prev owner indicated the Neutral Safety Switch was bad and needed to be replaced. I hadn't had an issue thus far so I didn't mess with it. I am wondering it that is the problem I am looking at today. i read this post https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...-no-start.html and it seems very similar to the issue i am having.

I am wondering of a good way to check the battery for enough power as well. The truck has been sitting for a while and the battery has been used some. I dont suspect battery because usually with a low battery the starter still turns some, albeit slowly. I swapped the starter relay just to be sure and no change. it just seems like the truck doesnt know its ok to start (aka thinks it is in gear) lol.

Thanks for the info forum, i know the NSS is a fairly inexpensive part but I don't want to do the wrong work! lol.

Cheerz!

If it's the NSS, it should fire up in Neutral but not Park. Get a voltmeter, put the red probe on the + batt post and black probe to the neg batt post...engine off. Should have exactly 12 volts, any less and you don't have enough juice to energize the starting system. When engine is running, a good batt will show about 14.5 volts if the alternator is doing its thing correctly.

Sup,

The starting issue was a bad ground. the Prev owner used duct tape to connect a splice coming from the starter up into the truck. fool. anyway, removed the tape, cleaned it, taped it with some electrical tape, all is well. I did the NSS too since i needed to be done anyway.

thx!
