Hey guys, I have a 1995 ext, cab SLT. Has the 5.2L in it. The truck has a ncie sound to it to begin with, but I want it to sound "meaner" and touch like a growl. My dad has a 2nd gen. dakota and he bought it with all these aftermarket parts so I'm not sure what exactly is in the exhaust system but he has a 4.7 in his but there is an exhaust tip on it (as far as I can tell all that Is noticeable) but his truck has like a low growl to it. What are some things on the sheaper side that I can do to enhance the sound? I saw a K&N cold air intake for about 140 bucks which I heard makes a difference. I also heard things as simple as an exhaust tip make a difference. I don't know, but I thought I'd ask the guys her eon the forum before buying stuff.

Yes a Flowmaster muffler is what you want. I got a Flowmaster 40, I love it. Tips don't do anything, just for looks.

A K&N air filter will help with performance. But not necessarily with sound. For tons of modifying tips check out the FAQ2 in this section.

 

Trust me when I say this.... Just put in a glasspack! Free flowing exhausts decrease back pressure and increase horse power and they sound mean. Glasspacks are used on everything from choppers to muscle cars...... Take the cat out and put one in place of it and run a shorter exhaust. If the government has enough ***** to impose a $1,700 "gas guzzler" tax on say.... any car with a 6.1L Hemi, why should you care about "emissions" or whatever BS?

When I drive down the street I set off car alarms. People (usually Ford drivers) think I'm racing them.... Glasspack is the way to go,man. Best $22.00+TAX I spent on my truck lol

 

Is your '88 Dakota carb or fuel injected?

 

i just cut the cat off and put a thrush muffler on and clamped half the pipes. nice and quiet at idle and screams like demons at wot...

i was at a carshow yesterday and someone with a 2nd gen dakota had one of those dry vent tubes on his exhaust. it sounded just like the true dual exhaust that some of the guys(or...pretty much everyone) put on the chevy trucks. the only downside was it had an annoying echo.

 

i have a glasspack with no cat and i love it, but i think flowmaster has more of a growl, but the glasspack is also about 40 plus dollars cheaper

 

If I had the money and time I would do a single muffler dual exhast, but it would be tricky using the one cat (I live in California). If I had no emissions laws to worry about I would dual it out with glasspacks for a mean sound and a power boost.

 

IMO Aero Turbine makes the best muffler, it's a lot more expensive than a flowmaster, but it sounds a lot better and performs better, it's also 100% stainless with no packing to blow out.

 

I'd have to agree with most everyone else...cut out the cat and throw on a Flowmaster 40 series. I have no cat and a SI/DO IMCO muffler that the guy at the shop said was a knock off 40 series and its got a smooth growl like rumble at idle, growls good when revved and a nice growl during normal acceleration and just amazing at WOT.
