Wrote a long reply and the forum booted me instead of posting
Also have a '91 and I've been chasing 'issues' of my own lately...
Short form, if you haven't had the battery disconnected lately you're looking at some wiring issues. If you have had it unhooked then you might just have an ASD relay on the way out, try switching it with the starter relay in the PDC and see if symptoms switch around, if they do you should be golden with a new relay
If you're not lucky then you need to check the notorious splices, we have them too, start with the one with the green wires and the fusible link that feeds it.
Good hunting!

well im way ahead of ya already i switched the ASD realy with the ac compressor relay havent gotten a chance to try her out yet and the green wire that feed the hole thing i have a long story about that but to make it short the instulation wore off and it welded itself to the wheel well and well that caused alot of havoc lots of smoke and some fire but it only resaulted in a melted ground cable but i fixed that splice really well know i didnt see any other splices but are there any other splice that could cause problems thanks

I've been in on those sort of deals before, so much fun it ought to be illegal...
I hope the switched relay sorts it out because an intermittent 'open' in the fusible link feeding that splice of green wires will do pretty much exactly what you're describing, especially if it is throwing a Code 42...
well i guess i will switch the relays in the order you have stated switch the ASD relay with the starter relay and i have that new fuel filter so ill swop er out too and what the hell the tank is getting pretty low so ill head to the petrol station and get the er filled i was wondering about fuel injector cleaner tho what brand or kind would you guys sujest for the older TBFI dakotas mine is the V8 5.2 with about 87K on her Thanks for the help
hey man I had the same exact problem on my 96 about 6 months ago. Look at the coolant temp sensor thats just to the drivers side of your thermostat. The plastic part of mine was melted and ever time the leads inside the sensor would make contact it would tell my PCM that I was grossly overheated and my PCM would shut my truck off. It was intermittent as well so I thought it was electrical or something was loose. Its kinda back there though so I would suggest gettin a t stat and gasket and the other coolant temp sensor that runs your gauge as well. I believe I paid less than $30 for everything at AutoZone. Good luck!

is it located toward the rear of the engine nexted to the distrubuter that was the only sensor i could find that had to pins on it that was threaded in to the block if so everything looked good please let me know thanks
okay another over look and the only thing i see next to the t-stat is a sensor with 1 wire coming out of it on the passenger side i looked on the driver side and there is nothing there so i wondering is there even a sensor for the computer on the 1991s
