Hey guys I'm a new Dakota owner and also new to the forums. I have a 1990 club cab 3.9l v6 and it is idling rough and so I cleaned the IRC and changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor and did an oil change and now the truck starts up but as soon as I put it into gear it dies. Why??? Oh my EGR valve stem is broken off to barely a nub so the hose isnt sitting on there great but its on there. I checked my PCV valve and its fine. Any help would really be appreciated. It could be anything. The IAC could just be bad. It could be wiring. It could be a vacuum leak. Or due to the EGR. Tons of possibilities.

Hey I replaced my egr valve last night and it helped a little bit, but when I put it into gear it runs for a little while and then begins to sputter and die. It sounds like its starving for gas because it tries to keep running but just can't. Also, every now and again the egr valve puffs out white smoke a few times when I'm cranking it. Is that normal (like a new one adjusting itself?) or did I do something wrong. I really appreciate any help or ideas. Its a 1990 3.9 v6 tbi

 

as for the idle/gas starved issue you may want to check the splices under the PDC. corrosion of those is a known issue and if there is a bad connection in there it could cause that problem. Mine did that when i had to replace the fuel pump as well, but wouldnt start after the pump was replaced. This was due to the wiring being corroded.

Fuel filter = on fuel pump in tank

I've heard some have a "secondary" fuel filter or something in line but I'm not sure on that. the main filter is in the tank and is considered part of the fuel pump assembly. It is possible to replace the filter from what i have heard tho.

 

The secondary fuel filter is inside the frame on the driver's side, a bit behind the front wheel.
