Paint Problems
Looking at buying a '92 Dak with around 90,000 miles on it. It has a 5.2 and the biggest problem seems to be the paint. It is grey and white with a red stripe on it. The paint has peeled real bad and wondering if we were to repaint it, what should we be thinking of doing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Roy
1. Tons of sanding! And more sanding! And more sanding!!
Or
1. Chemical paint remover. Then sanding and More sanding!
2. Fix dents, rust, line up body panels, get gaps consistent.
3. Bondo the areas that need it. Don't go over 1/4in thick.
4. More sanding.
5. Primer
6. More sanding.
7. Paint
8. 2nd or 3rd coat of paint.
9. More sanding if needed.
10. Clear coat.
11. 2nd clear coat.
More or less in these steps. Have fun!!!!

Yep all of that and some more sanding. Just to give you an Idea of cost I just started work on a buddies '99 Dakota. A. he is getting a hell of a deal from me on labor, but befor buying the actual top coat of paint the bill for materials was about $430.00 that was sand paper, primer, wax and grease remover, some tack cloths, medium weight body filler, light weight body filler, reducer, catalyst, body filler spreaders, mixing cups...and some other things.
Thanks for the replies. Does anybody know what caused the paint on these trucks to peel like that? Was it Chrysler paint gone wrong? And yeah, I get the message about the sanding (loud and clear). Maybe paint remover will be on my list.
I don't know for sure why the paint is peeling on yours. But some times if the primer and paint and not compatible the paint will do that. If the clear is peeling it is the paint and clear coat were not compatible.
Other elements too like the Sun or Salt will make the deterioration happen a lot faster.

from 1986 until about 1995-96 Chrysler had issues with paint peeling on vehicles, especially lighter colored ones(silver, gray, etc.) This was due to a bad batch of primer that Chrysler had recieved and didn't start seeing the peeling issue until the 90's. My '92 Dak that I had in high school was duct tape silver and when I bought it it had about half the paint peeled until the dodge dealer took it through the car wash and then all the rest of it came off...

I could never bring myself to spray can a car. I worked over 3 years in a body shop, so I learned how to do all this stuff the right way. I sprayed my truck 2 years ago with Du Pont base/clear and it still looks nicer than a lot of new cars' paint jobs when its clean.
