Default 1992 dakota 5.2liter alternator power surges

hello everyone, ive been having trouble with my dakota lately. when i drive it my volt gauge goes completely nuts. i though maybe it was just the gauge but when i put my volt meter across the battery i get between 12 volts and 19 volts. ive checked all the grounds and cleaned them very well. i dont know if this is a common problem or not but its got me stumped. id really apreciate any help you guys can give me. thank you

Voltage Regulator. Which is built into the alternator, IIRC.

If the regulator is built into the alternator, is it replaceable or do you replace the whole alternator?

Yes your correct.

But a faulty alternator can cause the voltage to jump. Most auto parts stores can test the alternator for free.

ok i took up to my local autozone and had the alternator and battery tested. they said the alternator was good but he regulator failed (they tested it on the truck). i asked him to set it all up again and i smacked the computer with my hand and had him start the test. everything passed. im thinking the regulator inside the computer is no good. is there any way to test the regulator just to make sure? i dont want to start throwing parts at it and hoping some stick ya kno what i mean.

The service manual may have a way to test it. Check the FAQ in this section to download it.
