Default 46RH question

I went to get a 46 for my 318 swap today and my friend looked it up at the yard and said 94-95 dakota only? Is that right? I would have thought any 46 out of ram or van would work. Is the cables or wiring different? I need help, this is getting agrivating

The 42RH and 46RH should have the output shafts of different length, so no, it isn't as easy as just swapping a few parts I don't believe.

Ive looked high and low in Indiana for a 46rh from a 94 or 95 dakota. Having no luck. Cash for clunkers must have killed this truck.

The 46rh was offered in 94 and 95 rams behind the 5.9l magnum. Usually in 2500 and 3500 chassis. It is noted that it was offered in some dakota's between 92 and 95 as well. The 46rh has a hydraulic control versus the electronic control of later years and the governor's are different. The later years are 46 re. The a518 is the same trans (Chrysler redid the nomenclature). The trans you are looking for has the 3 pin connector versus the 8 pin of the later models.

Actually all Dakotas All Rams and Vans with a V8 (5.2 and 5.9) from 92-95. Grand Cherokees with V8s too, but those wont work with the starter on the other side. Some sites list it before the magnums pre 92 too. Some sites state 94-95 output shafts have a different spline count then the others. But that can be swapped out easily if needed.

I have relevant data to contribute more info. I believe the A518 was offered from 90 to 95 in dak's, ram's and van's of the 5.2 and 5.9l type. When Chrysler updated there nomenclature to the newer system the numbers changed a bit. However, I believe that the 94-95 had the lockup feature standard as opposed to an option in earlier models. This data is unfortunately based on internet searches from secondary sources.

Yes like I said it came in pre magnums too. I know for sure 92-up had standard electronic lockup torque converter. I'm sure the previous versions had it standard too.
