Default 22 gallon tank? yeah right!!!!

i just bought a 95 dakota long bed with the 318. the guy i bought it from said find a gas station around 150 mile because the guage bounces all over. so i put 137 mile on it today and the truck died. i didnt know what the problem was at first but luckily i had a 2 gallon gas tank in the back. it started right up after i put 2 gallons in. it wouldnt start before this. i immediately drove to the gas station 4 miles away and it spit and sputtered a little on the way. here is the kicker. i could only get a little over 11 gallons in it. when i left the gas station it ran fine!!!
what could the problem be?? i understand that the only option was 15 and 22 gallon. its a long bed with a v8 so it should have a 22 gallon?

could it be an aftermarket gas tank?? im really lost and dissapointed i can only go 130 miles or so on a tank.

It should say on the bottom of the tank how many gallons it is.

yes there is a circle stamped on the bottom of the tank. the only numbers are 22. SO if its a 22 gallon tank WHY can i only get 11 gallons in it? it runs out at a half tank? is this a sign of a bad fuel pump? maybe loosing pressure or something?

I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like a previous owner may have pulled a frankentruck move and jury-rigged the wrong fuel pump/pickup assembly in the tank. One that was too short, only allowing you access to half your fuel supply.

yea could be something like that. If it hasn't been too long and you still have the guys number or email just ask him. I've done that a couple times with people. seems like a unique issue.

He could try calling, but that may not help.My 91 Dak has the twin electric fan mod,but ALL the wires for it are white. No black,no red, just white. The PO claims it was like that when he bought it.This is one of many backyard mods I've found sofar.

Just a risk we take in buy second(or 3rd,or 4th) hand trucks.Hence my term "Frankentruck".

word. absolutely one of those risks. I just suggest getting in contact with them in case there is some info to be had. Perfect example, in a truck i bought had some toggle switch. Had no idea what it was or why it was there. I finally called the guy who sold it to me and found out it was for some fog lights he had setup on it.

Never hurts, if they don't want to talk then they wont.

just my thought anyway. If they know the answer would save the time in having to take the truck apart to find out :P

You're right.I had 3 mystery switches.Turned out one was the moose lights on the front, one was a remote starter cut-off that didn't work anyways and the last was the ever important rad fans.

Hasn't anyone heard of Labelling switches?!

haha. Expecially a radiator fan switch... you MIGHT need that one....... frakentruck at its best, :P

It's all good though. Mine has wiring scattered all over the driveway right now (it's not that bad), so it's always something.
