Default Searched&searched no answers. Headlight issue

so it seems like a pretty common issue so to speak of the early 90's headlights to stop working. the other day i had forgot to tie down my battery and i was driving and my headlights flickered and went out i figured id just blown a fuse due to an arc or a surge from the battery rocking around. so i checked all the fuses under the dash in the panel and they are all fine. i replaced the headlights and still nothing i also replaced the switch in the dash but thats fine too as my dome light comes on but my dash gauges dont work now either. my hazards and blinkers work though. and i have no high beam. is there a differnt panel in the engine bay for fuse's? is there a common problem with the headlight wiring? what could be causing this?

Sounds like a wiring problem. Get out a multimeter and start finding out what has power and what doesn't.

u mentioned replacing the switch in the dash but what about the switch on the steering column. it is connected to the dimmer handle and it does fail, killing all headlight functions but usually still allows pass flash.

if u peel the lower cover off the dash, under the steering column and instrument cluster, u should find that the turn signal/blinker stalk is connected to a switch assembly on the column by a linkage shaft, that is moved by pulling up on the stalk. unless u have a tilt wheel feature, this linkage shaft is between the outer column tube and the steering shaft. when u pull up on the stalk, the rod is pushed down, toggling the dimmer sw between hi and low beam, and flashing the head lights for passing inconsiderate left lane hogs. u normally hear an audible click when pulling up on the turn signal stalk, when the sw is working normally. the head light sw on the dash only contains the circuit breaker that automatically resets after it cools, if something has caused excessive current draw in the head light circuit. in the flash mode, the dash light sw is bypassed, since u would not have the lights on in the daylight hours. also, this is another way to check the head light circuit. pull and hold the turn signal stalk in the flash position while someone observes the head lights for u. also see if the hi beam indicator on instrument panel lights while stalk is held in the flash position. i once had to drive over 50 miles at night, holding the the turn signal handle in the flash position, after the dimmer switch had failed.

looks like u just found the problem. sounds like u need to replace the dimmer sw. dodge is real proud of em so take money if u go to a dealer. i like oem but started to use lower priced napa parts, since the truck is 20 yrs old now. hope u have a factory manual but u can still figure it out with out one. be careful with the retaining screw that holds the sw to the column, 'cause it can strip out easily in that thin metal. now we can get a little off the wall for a moment. u have an electrical block that transitions the firewall and if that has gotten corroded pins, it may have killed the power lead that is suppling battery to the light sw on the dash, and if so, will prevent the flash/pass feature from working. unpluging the connector from the sw and measuring to see if u have 12 vdc coming to the light sw would resolve this. if u can trace 12 vdc from the inter firewall to the dimmer sw, somewhere along the way, should be the problem. it could even be after the dimmer sw but u have mentioned nothing to indicate this to be the case. basically, the voltage comes from the battery, to the firewall block, to the light sw, to the dimmer switch, back to the firewall, and through the harness to the headlights high or low beam, depending on the position of the dimmer sw. a center screw holds the firewall connectors together so loosening this should allow u to be able to examine the contacts coming through the firewall.
