Need Help w/Fuel Pump Issue...PLZ
Hey All,
I have a 1991 Dakota 5.2 4wd w/ apx. 135k miles. It hasn't been driven much the last few years & I haven't started it since spring. I went out to start it recently, & I don't have any fuel. I disconnected lines from filter & turned ignition on & still no fuel, fuel pump isn't coming on. I looked for a fuse or relay, but I didn't see anything related to fuel. My Haynes manual is very vague, but I traced the schematic it showed & looks like the auto shutdown relay is the only fuse or relay in the fuse system? I pulled it & cleaned the blade connectors, they were slightly dirty. Pulled the case off of relay & lightly cleaned up contacts w/ a nail file. Still no fuel. If I pour gas into the TB, it fires up, so I know I have spark, etc. Anyone have any suggestions and could someone tell me how I might test relay, if it isn't too difficult. The relay isn't very expensive, but I won't be able to get one today, and I sure would like to get it running today.
Thanks!
Tim

Hi ShowMeMopar, I saw your thread and it motivated me to do a DIY thread for fuel problems, check it out, it might help... https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...-friendly.html
There is a way to check the relay. The Haynes manual I do believe shows what terminals do what. The side with the magnetically controlled switch side is where you add your power to see if the relay clicks. The other side you can use a ohm meter to see if its opening and closing.
My manual is showing 2 relays. The terminals are lettered.
You could try and run power to the motor side of the pump from the battery to see if the pump will turn on. If you dont hear it kick in, its probably toast.

Check the splices under the relay box. That's the connection where the ASD relay powers the fuel pump relay and ign coil.
Also, swap around your relays and see if anything changes. For example, take the A/C relay (non-essential) and put it in the ASD spot (essential).

Thanks for the replies, guys! I like the DIY, Oxygen! When you say run a direct wire from battery, am I going to run it all the way to the pump? Will I have to drop the tank to get to it? Or splice in? I did like Sam said & swapped relays & fuses, but still no fuel pump coming on. But I haven't checked the splices under relay box yet. Thx for those ideas,Sam!
Gonna be a nice day tomorrow, I'll just have to DVR my Chiefs game and bear down on my Dak.
Thx!

Your welcome. Yes, run the wire from the battery to the pump. I had to reach in and undo the harness to apply power there. Extremely tight, you may have to remove the box or drop the tank.
Is there power to your terminals where your ASD relay is? You could test to see if there is power there as well.
Was thinking... you could splice into the original wiring or even test the wire itself to see if it has power. I would "jump" the pump directly though. And as for the splice, it is a good idea to check although, normally when that goes you have all kinds of issues. The wires are hooked up to many parts of the vehicle including lights etc. Non the less, its good to check.
I think your pump has seized up from sitting to long it's a good chance this is what happened.

Yea, I think it has, too. It has power going to it. I tapped on tank up around pump a bit w/rubber mallet w/key on, no luck. Anyone ever pulled the bed to change one? Would be nice to work over it, instead of laying on my back in the gravel, lol. Gonna try n tackle it this weekend....Dang pump is still kinda pricey for a 19yr old truck!
Anyone know where to get best price for one? Thru a friends account, O'reilly's was a lil over $150.....Appreciate the replies & help!

Pulling the bed is super easy. Just lining it back when your done takes the longest.
I got a deal through an account I have. Regular price was over $300 and I got mine for $150. Your going to need help to remove the box. Undo the u-bolts (might be rusted) and remember to remove your electrical and down spout hose for the fuel filler to the tank. If you have sturdy sawhorses, put the box on there to save having to lift it off the ground later.
