please help, need 5.2 magnum info tonight to decide to buy
found a low mileage 5.2 magnum, 96, auto. runs like a top, shifts great, solid truck definitely. the issue here is i was expecting, foolishly i guess, that it would be efi. its not, its got a 2 barrel holley on it, which i dont want, but i want the truck
does the magnum badge mean its different than other 5.2s? i am reading conflicting info on the forums?
can someone give me a good idea of how much of a pita it would be to convert it to efi. i am guessing harness computer fuel pump and what else?
if magnum is different, does that mean there are 2 diff efi set ups in terms of tuning? should i not bother to change it back because its a big bag of nonsense?
is it common for people to swap? i would def get the truck and do a swap straight up for the efi stuff, as long as its proven solid, i need 15-20 mpg, this thing seems to be tuned to run like a beast, it spins up at 50 if you stomp on it, in od. i romped on it for about 5 miles and ate an 1/8th tank. my 5.2 grand cherokee, which weighs more, never got less than 14.
help me out fellas, i really want the truck, its only got 66k, for a damn good price, and the mileage seems legit - i buy and sell motorcycles, and the occasional car and truck for a living, but i really dont know the specifics, i just run them hard until they die, and replace them. thats why i end up with mopar stuff i think, dirt cheap, simple, reliable.

The Holley is a throttle body, should be sitting on a "beer barrel' looking intake, the FI is on fuel rails and delivered to each cylinder individually, Magnum is just a name that was used on the 5.2 and 5.9 from 92 to early 2000's., no different from any other 5.2 of that year....it is a good motor, but heads have a tendency to have cracks.
I would probably buy it....what year is your grand cherokee, it is probably the exact same motor except starter is on opposite side.
Do you know how to test the plenum gasket?
If it really is a carburetor, it has been extensively modified..

hooray for ignorance, if it is efi
my last 5.2 cherokee was a 96, i tend to just run through trucks. i killed it last winter. well i killed everything but the motor and sold it, rest of the truck was toast. anyhow
66k miles legit with no wrecks for 35 seems decent to me
as for checking the plenum, no, but i have destroyed so many engines i can tell if they are running hinky, and this thing is definitely solid, pleanum leaks or not. no oil leaks at all, fluids are good, where they should be, running very cool, pulls like a beast.
is it normal for these guys to spin up the rear at 50-70 if you stomp on it? straight line well paved road regular whatever tires, warm, 60 degrees, dry....
i didnt take a close enough look at the intake to see, but it was the old school style round wing nut attached air filter body bolted down to a 2 butterfly valve tb that says holley. i will take a closer look.
why would it the filter and intake be diff than my 96?
this is NOT the tb off the truck, but its either almost identical, or identical. the one on the dakota i looked at was gold colored where it says holley

What year is the truck and how much? Mine has the magnum in it (EFI) and is near 300,000 km and still runs strong. They are solid trucks when taken care of. Depending on price and mechanical, I would go for it.

That is a Throttle body, which is part of an EFI engine. This is a carburetor for reference.

Plus, why not just look at the ECU box?
If you like the truck, and like the engine buy it.
