Question Engine Knock when cold?

I get a knock coming from what sounds like the top of the engine. Not sure what the cause for this is? Im running High Mileage 10W30. Loose rockers? When it warms up, the sound is a bit quieter. Oil pressure is good.

It has a Magnum 5.2L V8 (318) with 290,000 kms.

Its not a tick which would sound like a exhaust leak, loose spark plug or timing chain...

Typically the rockers/lifters/lift rods makes ticking. Knocking is usually a bad bearing. You can try the cheaters way and get some thicker oil like slick 50 or others. That may help, but a rebuild is best when it is that bad. Try to see if you can find exactly where it is coming from. If needed take it to a shop to get a price quote for a repair and see what that believe it may be.

A video may help.

Youtube is simple and easy. Photobucket also hosts videos.

As I feared its getting worse. A guy at work listened to it and says it sounds like a bearing in the bottom end wore out.

Hows much would it cost to replace the bearing and rod? And what is all involved?

Guy at work said around $150 if I can find one bearing and one rod. Also apparently it is easy to do? Drop oil pan, pull bearing cap.. replace bearing and rod?

Never opened up a engine so Im not too sure what is involved and dont have money for a mechanic to do the work right now. Its been getting louder and was fairly loud after my last recent oil change.

I will get a video up asap.

All internal bearings should be replaced. If you do manage to change one without doing rest guaranteed another one will be bad in a few months.

Sorry to say its time for a rebuild. $1,000 or less if you take it out to a machine shop to rebuild.

Thanks for the reply... not what I wanted to hear but its the truth. Its the only vehicle I have one the road and I have to come up with the money now. Not good. I hope it doesn't throw a rod or bearing in the mean time.

So some new news. Possibly better news. I had my fiance's dad take a look at the engine. He used to rebuilt engines including his jet race boat. Anyways, he said the sound is defiantly coming from the top of the engine. Possibly hydraulic lifters or rockers making noise? He also made a good point... there is no oil pressure loss what so ever. If anything its strong at 1/2 to 3/4 on the gauge. (not like my camaro that couldn't keep the pressure up once it ran warm)

I will have to give it a screw driver or pipe listening test. Also will have to post that video of the sound. Almost impossible for you guys to help if you cant hear it.

So that makes me a bit happier. Could still be a big job.
