I left work last week and got on the freeway my dakota wouldn't shift into od for about 1 mile then it finally did. The rest of the ride home it was fine. I have let it set for a few days and now won't shift at all in to od. I noticed the temp gauge low so I replaced the t-stat engine is running at the correct temp but still no od. What can I check?

the very first thing you should check before going deeper into anything is check the transmission fluid to see if its full, or check to see if the fluid is burnt. if it is brownish in color, or turning brown, its burnt. also try a transmission fluid and filter change.
as for testing the speed sensor, try getting up to cruising speed, and then stopping fast, dont lock up the brakes, just stop as fast as you can make it stop without skidding. note if it stalls or not. when you first put it in to drive a roll a couple feet forward or backward, the DRL's should kick in and turn on, note if they do or don't. is the transmission shifting fine other than not shifting into OD? just little testing factors like that are all I can think of, and is basically what I did when my speed sensor went.

One thing you can do before you start throwing parts on it, is find the OD pressure port just above the rear cooling line, when vehicle gets to around 50 MPH, pressure should be there..If there is any pressure ( whether low or not) , this would tell us all electronics are working.....Also your transmission harness near the same cooling line is 3 wire, the front wire is for OD ground.....If you tap into that wire with an LED light you can see if your computer grounds that circuit...
