Default Sure Grip

Have a Sure Grip rear end out of a 1999 Dak. Want to install the '99 Sure Grip carrier and axles into our '93 4x4 and want to use the original 3.55 gear set. Will this work? According to Rock Auto both these trucks have a 27 spline rear end but I thought they were different?

Assuming the 99 is a 8.25 you have have the right idea but 97+ axles are wider and will likely not work in a 27 spline housing (And yes 97+ are 29 spline). I'm unaware of anybody who's actually tried it though. It has been done with custom made axle shafts though.

Yes assuming it is a Chry 8.25 it WILL drop right in. You will need the Sure Grip as well as axle shafts. Yes the 2nd Gen is 29 spline, I don't believe it is wider since it is a known drop in upgrade. It has been done lots of times on here and other sites. Here in this article you can read all about it where they swapped in 2nd Gen axle shafts for extra strength and a LSD. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...swap-pics.html

Another note is there are 2 different size drum brakes 9in and 10in. If you got 9in and the 99 has 10 in, easy upgrade!

And if it is a Chry 9.25 Grab the entire axle and swap it in. Slight modification is needed though.

Thanks for the replies. They are both 8.25's but I would like to put new clutches in the '99 and I will have to talk to Rock Auto to see what they say about the spline, otherwise I don't know where to buy them.

Read the article again, they used custom made shafts, not stock 97+ shafts. I've looked up dimensions, they are wider. I'm unaware of anyone who's used stock 29 spline shafts in a stock 27 spline housing.
