If you change just the filter by dropping the pan it will take 4qrts. If you have the whole trans flushed it will take 8qrts.

Did you possibly change the switch on the transfercase or early years it might be on the front axle.
Also these trucks don't have transaxles, that is where the axle and transmission is one piece.
Which switch are you referring to? The 4WD indiciator switch or the switch on the transfer case? (sorry I used the wrong term earlier)Originally Posted by Crazy4x4RT

I didn't change the switch on the transfer case. I can but I can't seem to find the bloody thing any where to buy. The local auto parts stores can't get the switch on the transfer case or even the one on the front axle.
So I was thinking about this a little more today. Perhaps the 4WD light is correct and the front axle is just stuck in FWD. In a sense moving the transfer case from 2HI to 4HI will engage / disengage 4WD. It just means the front axle will always be locked in place.
If this is the case is it bad for the front axle to be locked at all times? I heard some people rig these up so the front is loged all the time and they only have to change the transfer case to get it in and out of 4WD.
2ndly I forgot to mention. The round plate on the front axle where the 2 vacuum lines run to. I took the lines off again and sprayed more WD40 in them to try to clean them incase it was sticking. I also took a paper clip and it went down the line near the driver side in 2WD. However in 4WD it goes down the side near the passenger side. So something inside is moving. But I have zero or next to no vacuum on those 2 lines in 2WD or 4WD. Tested in Park on the transmission.

Thanks for the feedback. Now that I have the 4x4 out of my mind I want to focus on the transmission leak. I was going to dump some myster oil in there to try to fix it but after reading I rear that's no good for these transmissions. I want to fix the leak the right way.
I plan on changing the oil filter and putting a new pan gasket on. I read that the best gasket for these is the OEM gasket. Any feedback? Also I don't see a drain bolt for this transmission. Do you just loosen the pan and let it run out one corner until you can drop the pan and dump it?
Lastly what all seals, gaskets, o-rings, etc are prone to go bad? I really hope I don't have to drop the transmission to repair the leak.
Thanks in advance guys!

Well I bought an OEM transmission pan gasket and filter. Taking the old one off all the bolts were just about finger loose. Not near the 150 in-lbs they should have been. It was a cork gasket. Replaced and will monitor for leaks and check the fluid after daily driving.
New mission on the truck is still the 4WD....I have one question.
I followed the steps to test my front axle disconnect. I took the 2 vacuum lines off up front and have NO suction in either in 2WD or 4WD. Does this mean the switch on the transfer case is bad or is there another problem some where? I thought from my reading that if the switch was bad vacuum would only be in 1 line and would not switch to the other when changing from 4WD to 2WD.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks,
Jeremy

Thanks for the reply. The local stealership has the switch for $4x.xx. I'll buy it and replace it sometime and report back.Originally Posted by Crazy4x4RT
Possibly a bad switch or a clogged line.
