what vehicles had the a500 that I can swap with my 91 dakota 4x4 auto with little to no mods? My trans is shot and I don't wanna get rid of my dakota.

 

Only v6's 88-91 came with the a500. 92-95 came with the 42rh which is the a500 with upgrades.

 

you can use them though til 95, 96 started the "RE".... and the "RH/RE"designations were only a change in name. same transmission til the "RE" came about and even those are not all that much different inside.just more solenoids and no mechanical (hyd) governor.

 

I have a v8 with the a500. Thats what the sticker under the hood says. Is it possible to put an a518 in it?

Magnum V8's yes only came with the 46rh (A518)
LA V8's were low powered enough the A500 was suitable.

 

No NOT true; I have worked on tons of Durangos, Dakotas, Grand Cherokees and even some B vans w/ 318s and 44RH/RE which are both versions of A 500s, NOT 518s.

 

96-up 5.2 V8's came with 44RE. Yes it is based on the A500 but it is not an A500. Just like the Magnums were based on the LA's but they are not LA's.
