How do I find out what tranny I have I have a 1996 dodge Dakota st cab with a 2.5l 5speed tranny

its listed in the FAQ thread, you have the AX-15 5 speed. or atleast thats what it should be.

So what's the dif between the ax-5 and the ax-15

theres only the AX-15. far as i have found thats the only AX trans that was made by chrysler.

The ax-15 is in the jeep with the 4.0 but from what I found I can mount the 4.0 up to my ax-5 tranny

Ok I just found out that the ax-5 is a weaker tranny used in the jeep but was dropped in favor for the ax-15 due to it being a stronger tranny

jeep motors from what i know will not work in a dodge because of the starter location on the passenger side, as opposed to dodge motors being driver side mounted.

I know mine has the 2.5l Amc jeep motor I just did the 4.0 tb swap on it

I post a pic if it lets me it might take me a few try I'm doing it off a iPad but my starter is on the passenger side so I was wondering I have a jeep motor and a jeep trannyAlready in it dose that mean I could put a jeep 4.0 in it

if the starter is already on that side i cant say for sure if it will or not. the 4L might be too long to fit in the engine bay, but like i said not for certain. Post pics of the swap they could prove useful to someone else. above all, measure 3 times, do the work once!
