1996-03 97-up most 5.2 autos came with the 44re so make sure you get the correct transmission 46re which will be on a few 5.2's and all 5.9's

If yours is a 2wd I have a good 46re sitting in my garage. Has 120k total on it but was rebuilt about 60k.

I think there was a 46re in the for sale section but not sure if it is what you need. Ive also heard that you can just swap the tail shaft section between the 2wd and 4wd and use your tcase.

According to my transmission guy changing a 2wd to 4wd or vice versa is basically a full rebuild.

IIRC you got to remove the OD unit and swap it onto the other transmission. The big problem is you got to have a 4wd transmission to get the 4wd OD unit from.

In my mind if your taring it apart just to do that you might as well just throw the 4wd transmission in and don't have to open it all up.

Bottom line is that if you have a good 96 or later (not the early one with the three wire connector) 46re 2 or 4wd front end you could rebuild your 4x4 OD and swap
What went out?
If it was the OD you can rebuild to diesel (47) specs
If it was the front end you can get a 47 core and swap the guts
I've got the straight cut diesel gears in mine
no more thrust on the thrust washers which are the biggest source of failure
I think i have 9 clutches in the OD- the diesel just added one more (than V8 many more than V6) increasing the pressure slightly
If your unit is burnt up then let's talk oiling mods
If your big OD spring is sagged get Transgo's heat treated one
So what let loose?
