dodge cranks but wont start
hi all! im new to the forum. iam working on my parents 1992 dodge dakota, v8 with an autmatic. its been having a problem when it gets hot it dies and wont start. after waiting a little while it will start. it has done this a few times and now wont start at all. it cranks over and sputters like its gonna start but never does. it has spark, checked fuel with starting fluid and can hear the fuel pump run when key is turned on. i threw my first part at it today after some research and replaced the cps and that didnt help. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
i havent checked the fuel pressure with a gauge. i have checked with spraying some starting fluid into the throttle body. also can hear fuel pump when key is first turned over. after cranking a while and sometimes hitting the gas i can also smell the gas. i can try hooking a gauge to read the pressure. any ideas on where to hook it up at
Yes hook it up to a fuel pressure gauge. If your not getting correct pressure it won't get the proper air fuel mixture. The test port is on the fuel rail, its a large schrader valve just like a tire.
Are you positive your getting spark to all plugs when it doesn't run?

Ok I will have to purchase a fuel gauge to check that. I have spark at the coil wire and I also get spark at the plug by testing with a screwdriver and ground. I feel it's a decent spark cause I accidentally held the metal and got a nice spark. Rookie mistake lol. I wasn't sure it was sparking at the right time so that's why I fought the crankshaft positing sensor. I have been told by someone else it's the comp? Thank you for your help ill get the gauge and check pressure and get back to you
Ok so after checking fuel pressure. When key is first turned on its at 35psi. When u crank the motor it drops to around 25 psi. Is this good fuel pressure and what should it be at. Also I'd like to mention there is no codes. Any suggestions?
the spec for the fuel pressure is 35-45 psi at idle for a 95. there pretty much the same but i don't have a 1992 factory service manual for reference. If the truck has larger tires than stock check the asd (auto shut down) fuse. if that fuse is burnt then trace the wire loom from the driver side firewall down the frame. behind where the rear side of where the tire would touch on a full left hand turn. my 235/75/15 rubbed there resulting in a short. other than that its not a fuel problem imo pressure seems good. I would pull the iac valve and clean the carbon off it to see if that helps. do not spin the part that pokes out.
The IAC motor is located on the back of the throttle body by two bolts and a wire harness.
