oh well thats good news then i didnt see any badging, labels that it had been a magnum so thanks for clearing that up for me. i am not gettin spark i am gettin voltage to the coil (weather or not correct voltage). would this indicate the ignition control module is the problem? going to go check what voltage i am gettin at the coil primary circut.

ok so i tested both with a dvom, black wire to coil primary is 10-11 volts while cranking green wire is 6-7v while cranking, they are a bit over 4 volts constant difference (ie. i plugged dvom to both sides and cranked) seems like there should be more than a 4v difference to make the coil spark. is this usefull in pointing to the problem? again thanks all for all info it is very much appreciated

doubt it ( wont say impossible though) the "ignition module" is the computer itself on these. I would guess most likely one of 2 things;
either the crankshaft sensor OR ELSE the distributor pickup. NO NEED to replace the dist to replace that... only need to pull the cap n rotor.
orig equip crank sensors are plastic and I've busted a couple over the years.... it don't have to physically ne broken to be bad though

ok i have replaced the ckp it is brand new i pulled a "replace before you know whats wrong" moment. so unless it was faulty from the factory, that shouldnt be the problem. will try to replace the distributer pick-up.

Default 1992 dodge dakota le 4x4 5.2 v8 magnum

I have a question I have a 92 dodge dakota 4x4 with a 5.2 mag v8 I have power to coilc spark to cap and rotor it cranks it will start for about 5-10seconds but wont stay running plus the break lights dont work. My question is why my truck isnt running? The other part is is that I was able to drive it for 2 days I got to my parents house but now it wont run. I also replaced plugs distributor cap rotor and the coil the fuel pump works and I'm getting fuel to the chambers.

It won't run because something's not right.

What?

I dunno.

You'll have to start testing.

Due to the age, I'd start checking ALL the vacuum lines since a bad vacuum link can kill one.

Have you done the fuel filter (on the frame, driver's side, about where the seat is, under the truck)? When you say it gets fuel, what fuel pressure does it have when the motor cranks?

Look down inside the throttle body with the key in your hand (so it's not running!) and see how dirty and oily it is. You may have a plenum gasket leak.

Have you picked up a copy of the factory service manual yet? You can find them used on eBay quite often in paper; Bishko Books is the reproducer for FCA; Summit amongst others can also order from Bishko for you. (Bishko has the 1992 FSM at a little under $40 plus shipping right now as I type this).

As to the brake lights, that's probably a different thing.

Oh, one more thing - you probably need to check the three wire splice by the battery to make sure it's not corroded. If there's any question, I'd redo the splice.

EDITED: the first response by Rich did not show up on my phone.
the fault of my truck which has not been sold was the IAC got coated in oil (blown plenum gasket) and the truck wouldnt fire at all. IAC and plenum gasket was since replaced and truck was sold.

if you push the gas a bit, does it stay running longer or die at the same time frame as if you werent?
it could also be the CKP and or CMP going out.
might be something to check
