Is it possible to convert a 46re to 46rh?
Ok like the title states convert the trans not swap... I have a lifted 93 kota w 92 5.2 on 40s I have a 46re trans now n its slipping now.. I'm not easy on it its a mud toy.. Any info on converting it would b great thank you guys.
It might be possible but all the guts will have to be completely removed and reinstalled, if your going that far you might as well just rebuild your transmission with new parts instead of used parts which you will have to rebuild in a few months once the use parts fail.

you may have to find a stick shift computer for your year
case and valve body are different
and why?
re be be built just as strong
get a 47 core and use the guts
transgo reprogramming kit
1/2 cooler lines and 100 plate external cooler with add on filter
drill out the oil passages and larger connection fittings while it's apart
braze and bearings in the converter
go real easy on the stall- mudding overheats easily

what cam, gears. tires etc?

So use my 46re case w 47re guts? I simply don't want electronic... I also already have a after market Trans cooler n fan mounted in the bed with -6 braided hose... Stock 318.. 373s for now 40 tsls upgrading to 42 boggerss
I re-read your question.
So you think you have a 46re on you 93 Dakota, which the engine (and transmission? you didn't state if so) came from a 92 Dakota. Right?
The RE's didn't come stock until 96. So if the transmission came from the 92 or even anything up to 95 then it is a RH. The OD and TCC are electronicly controlled that is it on RH's.
So you should have a hydraulically controlled transmission.
Are you 100% positive you have a RE with a 8 pin transmission plug and from a 96-up truck?
A RE would require a 96-up wireing and pcm and tons of work on a pre 95 truck.

Hmmm is that right.. I didn't kno the started em in 96.. But yes drive train is 92.. N i has aa 3 plug connector that's where i was confused.. Called the dealer with the vin n he said 46re n i asked r u sure he responded yes.. Is there a stamping on the Trans? Its out now what do i look for besides the connector? I'm on my phone i don't know how to post pictures. Crazy4x4rt i like ur truck i read up on afew of ur post to do mine.

Yea you have an RH, there's no question about that. As far as the 47RE thing, the 47 series is out of the cummins trucks. Has steel shafts instead of aluminum, and is overall a MUCH stronger transmission. you would need to find a 94' or older cummins truck to pull it out of to get the 47RH, and if you know someone who is good with transmissions, not just some chain shop but someone good, they can pull the guts out the 47 and put them in the 46 case. It's actually exactly what I'm doing on my truck as part of my overhaul.
Ok.. So how can I confirm that I have a 46? Any stamps to look for or what? I do have a transmission builder.. Doubt he's done a 46/47 hybrid.. Also assuming the casing are different? Swapping the guts it is a pretty straight foreword if u know what your doing? I canny just bolt a 47rh up to my 318? Thanks
