Default alternator upgrade...

Well my winch is supposed to be here tomorrow. I order a smittybilt x20 12 -12000lbs winch and i was wondering if there are any alternators with a higher output that will be a direct bolt on, like from other dodge/jeep vehicles. I honestly dont know the output of the alternator on my truck but i know it powers the heater wipers engine stuff and 6 100 watt h3 off road light at idle pretty decent, but adding another 330 amps of draw (for full 12k pull) will push me quite over the limit imo. I already have 2 large batterys and upgrade all grounds to 0 gauge (will upgrade alternator wire to that as well when i get a new alt) but im looking for an even bigger alternator. im having a hard time finding a "high output" online as well....thanks in advance

also has anyone thought of wiring in an "internally regulated" alternator versus the external regulator wire up as i have already done?

Stock comes with several output versions. 90amp to 120 amp. You can get the 120 amp from most autoparts stores, it is a direct replacement, simple to do.

Yes upgrade the wiring. You said 0 gauge ground, but do you have it on both batteries and multiple grounds on each battery, 1 to the frame and 1 to the engine and 1 to the body(all above stock). As well throw a 2nd line from the alt to the both batteries. As well as an extra line straight to the 2nd battery.

Run the winch lines directly to the battery as well as the offroad lights ect.

Where did you mount your 2nd battery? I built in a 2nd battery tray into the passenger fender. I got 2 Optima yellow tops.

The next option is some 94-02? Rams got a 136amp version. You can buy that new from most autoparts stores as well. It's a direct swap as well.

I had the 120 amp alternator it ran my XRC12/12,000lb winch just fine, trust me I ran it hard too. I got the 136amp now since the old one died, due to cheap Autozone quality.

The next is aftermarket universal units that put out 200-500amps but those run $500-up. Since it is universal you have to make it fit.

i just moved my washer fluid tank, and modified the stock box to fit both batterys together. (involved less work than moving the canister on the passenger fender) and yes, both batterys have multiple 0 gauge ground (fender, engine, frame and the main battery has 2 to the engine one being direct to the alternator. all this 0 gauge makes for a lot of big wiring under the hood LOL) and the original battery still has the stock grounds hooked up.

i did run a second 6 gauge wire direct from the alt output to the second battery and have the stock output wire running as stock to the first battery.

the batterys are connected together with 0 gauge as well. only thing missing which im debating is the isolator for the second battery ( which how larger of an isolotar should i get if i do decide to get one)... and upgrading both alternator output cables.

The winch will get connected straight to the second battery, and the off road lights, cb, fogs, stereo, and other accessories are all wired direct (with relays if necessary) to the second battery.

I think i shall do some looking into the 136 amp alt, id rather have more than enough than not enough LOL.

I've been looking at upgrading as well. I was looking at the rear of the 136amp and the connections do not match mine on my 318. Was there a difference for the connections between the 318's and the 360's? Maybe a year change difference?

Yes the plugs are different 91-98 vs 99-up. All you need to do is swap the back plug on the alternator. This thread has the info.

After reading that thread there is a 160 amp version. To bad I didn't see that thread when upgrading to the 136, I saw a different thread that didn't talk about the 160amp. As soon as I need to, I'm swapping for this one.

well i got a 136 amp swapped in from a 99 durango, bolted right up no problem...

but it seems to be squealing... then last night my belt sheared apart...

my original only had the 6 groove pulley, the new one is a 7 groove. the old pulley is a bit larger, so i left the 7 groove on... should this cause me issues? should i go change it out? i think im going to take my alt back and swap for a different one, crappy part being they dont stock it at oreillys.... which is the closest parts store to me. and where i bought it, thankfully for the lifetime warranty if it does give me issues i can always return it

As long as the squeaking sound was the pulley/belt then just swap the pulleys. You will probably need an impact wrench to remove and install it.

But if it is squeaking due to a bad bearing it will need to be rebuilt.
