Default oil pan

As stated in a earlier thread I will soon attempt to replace my 5.2 with a 5.9 that's sitting ready on my engine stand. I've read in some manuals that the 5.2 and the 5.9 will not interchange oil pans and in other articles I've read that they most certainly will???

On the Hughes Engines web site they list different part numbers for the oil pan gaskets and different stock oil pans for the 5.2 and 5.9 but then they show a very expensive, deep H.P. oil pan for Dakotas that shows it will fit either size engine.

Of course I have the 5.2 in my truck with the Mopar reusable gasket and I have the 5.9 oil pan that came with the 5.9 I rebuilt but I think is unusable in the Dakota. I'm hoping that I can use the 5.2 oil pan and gasket on the rebuilt 5.9. Am I going to find a big UH OH here? Does anybody know?

According to Napa the engine oil pan is used on both 5.2 and 5.9 engines. See this link. Click "buyers guide".

So yes you can use your stock 5.2 engine oil pan on the 5.9 engine.

Forward then, thanks for all you do Crazy, you should get paid for it. I would like to post some new pictures if I can sit down and try to figure it out.

from time to time chrysler would make changes in engines seemingly the same, so you dont put a higher HP engine in front of a trany not rated for that much power. ie. put a HP 440 in front of a trany made for a 383. the tranys are NOT the same. same with the 318 trany with a 360 in front of it. it has taken me years to under stand this. these changes are not a MISTAKE by chrysler.

The problem used to be between the 318 and 360 LA engines because they had a different size rear seal. I believe they are the same size for the magnums (5.2 and 5.9 both use the old 360 size rear seal).

Oh, and if you (or anyone reading this for that matter) do decide to use the pan you were talking about on Hughes website it is a few bucks cheaper on
engine-swaps.com I guess it comes down to how much Hughes charges to ship that pan.

I've read that Dodge changed the rear main seal housing so that the oil pans would interchange in the Magnum engines but they will not interchange between the LA 318 and LA 360. You still can't interchange the crankshaft or rear main seals!!! Just made me wonder why they would list different oil pan gaskets???

That is kind of strange that they list different gaskets, every time I've read about 5.9L swaps it says that the 5.2L oil pan will work. Never actually tried it myself so I can't tell you for sure. I know for sure that the 360 LA pan will not interchange with any other LA (273, 318, 340). Do you still need to drive the truck? If not, I would just start on the swap and try the 5.2 pan on the 5.9 and see if it fits properly.
