Default 88 dakota notbgetting fuel

I've replaced the fuel filter for one. I was thinking it was a bad relay so I just jumped the wires to take place of the relay. Now with the wires jumped and the key off, if you go back to the gas tank you can hear something coming from the tank, but when I try and start it, I'm still not getting fuel. What am I missing? And I am getting 12V at the pump on the green wire with black stripe.

By "something" do you mean noise or fluid? What engine? Did it just randomly stop one day or have you noticed gradual change? More detail please!

Fluid and noise. Like the fluid is bubbling maybe? No. Sure how to word it. But lets just go with fluid.
Its the 3.9L.
Story behind the truck is a lady iI know had it and it just quit running one day and that was about 2 years ago. Then a few days ago I got it. Truck woukdnt crank at all, turned out to be some of the positive battery cable wire had started breaking at the terminal. Swapped the terminal and now it cranks no problem. It just isn't getting fuel now.

The starter cranks it, but are we sure it is getting spark? What's the condition of the fuel filter? Are the lines rusted? How old is the gas?

Have you pulled the fuel rail and then cranked it to see if it squirts fuel from the line? (Dangerous, but conclusive )

When I spray starter fluid it'll run just a little but then dies obviously.
Fuel filter is brand new, gas is brand new, lines don't look bad at all.
I pulled the inlet fuel line off the filter and cranked the engine and I didn't get a drop of fuel.

I think you've got some blockage somewhere or a bad pump.

A more expert person re: the earlier Daks can tell you if you also have an in-tank filter, but I think your next step will probably be dropping the tank either way...

I think you might need to read this, the remarks are specific to a Dakota with fuel injection, but can be adapted to a carburated system. The pressure regulator is at the inlet of the fuel rail on an injected engine, I don't know if carburated engines have them. My take is that you need a new fuel pump on your 24 year old truck.

the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump can also cause the problem without generating a code. The fuel pressure regulator is designed to use engine vacuum to reduce the pump pressure from 40 to 31 psi a second or so after starting. You need a fuel pressure test gauge to see this happen. If it doesn't and your vacuum is good, the regulator may need replacing. A vacuum gauge is great to have, but if your cabin heater doors work and the cruise control works, its pretty safe to say you have good vacuum. A fuel pressure gauge will also reveal whether the fuel pump is running. If not, it may mean the pump is bad or that power is failing to reach the pump. Power to the pump can be seen at pin 15 (often, a green/black wire here) of the blue receptacle/white connector found under the dash near the base of the steering column. Pin 4 of the pump connector (on top of the tank) is the hot lead. Pin 1 is gnd and the other two are the sending unit leads (one for the gauge and one for the "low fuel" lamp). If your fuel gauge is screwed up, your pump power may be too. Of course, the pump may be heard to run (or not) by listening at the fuel filler port as your helper turns the key. Remember the two second thing, however (see the third paragraph). An intermittent pump can often be made to run by striking the tank with a soft hammer. This is diagnostic for a pump on its way out.

P.S. Sounds like yours runs but doesn't put out any fuel. There is a fine filter screen on the bottom of the fuel pump. It can become clogged. You'll see it when you pull the pump. You get to choose between dropping the tank or lifting the bed. Be extremely careful doing so. disconnect the battery, of course and don't break the plastic barb fitting off the rollover valve. These go for 108 dollars at the dealer which is about the only place you'll find them. I'd hook the fuel pump relay back up if I were you.

Thank you vhinz for your big input. I never even thought about the screen being clogged. I think there was some old gas in the tank so it probably clogged up the screen. I put 10 gallons of fresh fuel in so I guess now I'll be siphoning it out lol

Now another issue has come up. My new fuel pump relay isn't sending any juice down to the pump. But when I use my jumper wires in place of the relay I get full juice. Is the new relay bad?
