Default Fuel gauge

My fuel gauge on a 94 Dakota 4x4 SLT goes to zero {empty} at idle, but when you step on the gas goes up to where it's supposed to be.Is this normal? Is the gauge supposed to show how much is in the tank at idle? My wife just drove it and never noticed that before.Could it be stuck? Where is the fuse for the fuel gauge located? I don't have a fuse guide ,because it didn't have one.I'm confused here. Thanks

The needle on my '95 just started fluctuating but not quite like what you described. Mine jumps around all over the place unless the tank is full. Once it gets below 3/4 it just goes nuts. I'm assuming it has something to do with the sending unit.

I replaced the whole fuel pump which the sending unit, and fuel filter is attached several years ago. I don't want to replace it again. It's expensive.

Is there any additive to lubricate the units in the fuel tank? Like get rid of the crude or clean up the lines etc? Been using lucas to clean up the injectors once in a while.

I had both of the problems being described with the fuel issue. I had gotten into an accident and it didn't work at all so I had to replace the sending the unit in the tank cause the float broke off. The second issue occurred when I got truck back from shop and the gas gauge was all over the place and it was a bad sending unit. I only paid for one thank god the second one was faulty, but that's what the issue was with mine.
