Exclamation Weird noise when putting 1995 Dodge Dakota SLT into reverse?

1995 Dodge Dakota SLT
Today when i was stuck on a hill (icy out) i put my truck in reverse to get out and there was this loud errrrr sound, kind of like a belt? but it wasn't metal sounding and not a grinding sound, and it happened when i was stopped but in reverse, it was really loud and before i would get the same sound once in awhile (or maybe all the time it was quite and might not have paid attention) when i put my truck into park, i noticed it today also and same sound but not as loud, and when i would put it into park it'd last just short enough that i could put it in park, hop out of my truck and miss the sound, it sounds like it comes from the engine but like i said i can never get to the sound in time. Thanks in advanced.

sound like a hockey card in spokes of a bike? I can understand if on icy hill and u put in reverse the back tires might have still been going forward even tho u was stopped and the sound was it still in gear...

No, it wasn't a grinding, or stick on bike spokes, it sounded like a belt, but it was a deeper sound, not a squeak either, but i have no idea what belt it would be, if it makes any difference there is a squeak from some belt, but that goes away once my truck warms up, and when i put it in reverse it was after i let it warm up for a good 4-5mins as i was parked on the hill that day. also when i put it in park it goes from a low tone, to a high pitch and fades off

like whirring sound from offroad tires on dry pavement?

- 2wd? 4wd?
- if 4wd was it in 4wd?
- was it in 2wd? ...
- dose it do it in foward and reverse?
- dose it do it after driving a while?
- Only on cold start up?
- worst when turning sharp?

just wondering cause if 4wd it might be alot of things from front end not engaged properly to 4x4 not properly to chain in Xferecase slipping to front cv joints..

it wasn't anything to do with the tires, i was at a complete stop, and i am rear wheel drive, no 4wd, though if i had had 4wd i probably wouldn't have been stuck in the first place (had to back all the way down the hill and get a "running" start

wasnt saying tires was trying to use tire/road noise as a comparison for noise since i run tsl boggers on my 92 4wd and i sound like a sesna goign down the road LOL

anyway its possible its a bearing front or rear.. or possibly the pinion in rear diff .. mine went on my 2002 and its noise came and went till it finally wouldnt stop...

sounds like the trans filter is clogged. this happens in the cold if the filter is clogged. cause rev needs much higher pressure. what you herd was the oil pump was excavating. try changing the oil and internal filter..check out this EXTERNAL filter. mods needed.

man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com
