I was cleaning my EGR valve today and remembered to snap a picture of where the parking brake cable hooks should go. I have a new cable but need to either find or make a set of the hooks since mine are AWOL. I would very much like to have parking brakes.
Does anyone have a picture of what the hooks look like? There's one directly under the driveshaft and then one in the corner - I believe roughly where I have red circles. I think I have this much figured out from the parts book. My local junkyard didn't have any 4WD Dakotas that were old enough to have the correct parts for what my 1990 needs.
Yes, I need to replace my transfer case tailshaft bushing and seal...
Thanks, their photo is just from the factory service manual which I already have.
The parts book is pretty unclear - it uses the same diagram for both 2 and 4WD models. I think the '90 2WD does not have the center hook under the drive shaft and the 4WD does, and I know the part number of the corner j-hook is different from 2 to 4WD. I have an extra 2WD j-hook that I might be able to make work.
I can tell that anything after '90 has different part numbers but appears to be essentially the same arrangement - just the corner hook for 2WD, and corner plus center hooks for 4WD.
Maybe I oughta just crawl under the next '87-'90 4WD I see sitting in a parking lot
I just might have a spare center hook around somewhere. For the corner adjusting hook, I don't have one that isn't seized and rotted. As a solution, I bought a length of threaded rod, a big fender washer, and some nuts; the only thing I reused was the cable guide. I MIGHT have a spare cable guide too. I'll look around if you're interested and I'll take pictures of my somewhat jerry-rigged tensioner assembly.
So I looked and I do have the corner cable guide, but I can't find the center one. I didn't look too hard though so if you're interested I'll look again.
I am interested in the center hook if you happen across it. I can check a couple of different junkyards when I visit family over Christmas, too. From what I can tell the parts book shows the same part number for all of the 4WD models from '87 to at least '93.
I have the corner j-hook, cable guide, and nut assembly from a '90 2WD that sure seems to be close. Unless I find the 100% correct j-hook from a '90 or earlier 4WD I think I can make what I have work. The cable guide and nut are the same for all models but the hooks must be different lengths based on 2 vs. 4WD and '87 to '90 also being different from '91 and later. The parts book shows 4 different part numbers due to that.
Sorry wjohn, I can't find the center hook. I thought I had a leftover one from my new frame but hell if I can find it.
No problem; thanks for looking. I'll just keep my eye out for one at a junkyard, or at least get a picture so I can replicate it if it's simple enough.
Ah, no wonder it's missing. I thought maybe it was threaded and retained with a nut but that's not the case. Thanks for the pics - now I'm sure I can make something if I don't find a used one.
