I considered the LS series motors in mine but have since changed my mind. FWIW I was going to go 5.3 or 6.0 with a 4L60 or possibably a NV3500. The reason I changed my mind is, not being sure what would be involved with the transfer case and transmission being adapted to the stock suspension. Specifically adapting the front driveshaft and alignment as well. There is a site. LSDAK.com that has a lot of info on doing this conversion, however it is mainly 2nd gen. and 2wd. I have yet to find someone who adapted the LS drivetrain to a stock suspension 4wd 1st gen. Dakota.
Good luck and how about posting some pictures of the truck.

Worked a few years for a restoration company specializing in Corvettes. Dropped a lot of LS engines in a lot of things in my day, but never a Dak.

Even though I had very nasty parting with that company, my phone still rings for advice on LS swaps in 1955-57 Chevys...

So that looks like a ball joint 8 lug front axle, is it a 60? Pics weren't really clear enough. Got more pics of the solid axle swap? Any particular reason you went front hung shackle?

The front hung shackles was when I first built the truck with a D44 then I redid it with shackle in back with HP D60 that is ball joint..
