Hey guys, got a 91 Dakota, 3.9l, doesn't like to start after I fill her up. My recent quick fix has to been to start the truck before I take the cap off and fuel it (which I know isn't exactly safe, but it works). Truck runs great any other time, fires right up. When it first started happening I'd have to shoot some starting fluid into the intake and after a few tries she'd fire right up. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about trading it soon and want to solve the problem before I do.

 

I had a VW that did that. The issue was the charcoal filter canister in the evap system needs changed. Apparently once its clogged the fill up causes an airlock. It goes away after a few minutes, does yours? IDK if the dak has that sort of setup.

 

Maybe the purge valve on the emission canister is stuck open and is flooding the engine when refiling.

onemore94dak, that sounds like my problem, I know for a fact the '91 has a charcoal canister, I'll try that. I'd either have to prime the intake, or let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes.

 

Well, it's a "vapor canister", same difference?

 

Jcraven, Let us know if it works. I would figure it serves the same purpose. It was a common enough known problem that entering the symptom in a search found me a post in which someone else had figured out the same problem. I was pretty sure it was a simple thing and I suspect the guy who sold it to me had been given the mechanics "that's gonna cost ya.." speech. He never told me about the issue. I figured it out after the second fill up. The folks around me are bunch of count your fingers after you shake their hand types. That was a nice car but some old guy T boned me. I'm still jacked up from that accident almost 6 years ago. phillip123hastings, You can edit the post and add in something that say you made a mistake because the system does not let you delete. You have to have a minimum number of characters once you make a post.

 

I haven't gotten around it yet, but looking through a few auto parts stores, I seen that there is a kind of "filter" in the can, from a few pics it looks like some cottony type material, similar to a foam air filter you'd find on a dirt bike or something. If I get the time today to check it out, I'll update on the progress.
