1993 LE(Lesbian Edition) ext. Cab, 3.9L 2WD.
After nearly ****ing my pants at the price of a K&N air intake, I decided to take matters into my own DIY hands. I cut myself in 2 places, and I was even wearing gloves. It was totally worth the finished product though. Used a dremel for most of it, then cut a 1/2" hole in the top for the PCV hose.
For the record, that's a K&N air filter.

The day after I took this picture, I wrapped the sharp metal edges with Rustoeum duct tape.

Cool Idea, but that's not a cold air intake buddy. Heat from your exhaust manifolds is going to rise and be sucked straight into the intake. You're better bet is to buy to intake adapter for the throttle body, and then build the rest from pvc if you wanna save a little money and go DIY.
No cold air intake is a "cold air" intake. Hope that makes sense. Cold air intakes don't necessarily intake cold air, just extra air compared to stock. They're designed to flow better which gives the engine more oxygen.

Cool. I was considering doing something like this, just haven't gotten around to it.
Would there potentially be any issues having the PCV hose to the inside of the filter rather then the outside like with stock configuration? (I'm thinking no, but not 100% sure)
Alacoque, although it may not be "cold" air per say, the point of having a long tube you see in a typical CAI is to route the intake away from the engine heat allowing the engine to take in cooler, denser air. Yes this custom fabbed intake may be taking in [I]more[I] air, it's not going to be "cold". Look at a K&N CAI, notice the box around the filter. That is to block as much engine heat as possible.
My thoughts behind the mod were simple. The stock intake would get blistering hot after running, that plus thee small intake hole doesn't allow air to flow as well.
If I cut out everything but the center, I could aleviate some of the the air coming in, and heating up in the big drum. I've noticed a major low end power increase, reletively speaking. On-ramps no longer require me to floor it to get upto speed on hills.
Also to explain Lesbian Edition, my dak is luxury edition, but it's not a manual, 4x4, or a V8. So the "LE" on the side means lesbian edition to me.
Sucking air in from the engine bay is no improvement either way you look at it. The term "cold air" was coined by the aftermarket companies that made intakes that get the air from a cooler place in the engine bay(some with shielding from heat sources). Still not "cold air". True cold air is outside the engine compartment. A functioning ram air hood is true cold air. A scoop and a way to get air it in the engine is a nice way to go.
Not the same truck and this needs a little more work but you get the idea. Using a duel snorkel air cleaner and some heater vent to holes in the radiator support is another idea(old school way).
