have been having the common stalling problem with my 96 dodge Dakota 3.9L. I have put in so much money to it to try and fix the problem but no luck. However on the computer by the left side if you are facing the engine head on you will see three clip ons to the computer module. For some reason the middle clip does not fit tight enough to the computer and over time will cause your truck to stall. The simple solution I did was zip tie the clip as tight as I could to the computer and for 2 weeks my Dakota has not stalled nor backfired. So do yourself a favor and try this before you sink anymore money into your truck.
Finished product and no more stalling or backfiring. Hope this helps

What does your computer module look like?

 

94 was using the SBEC, looks like this:



To go with the change to OBDII, 1996 picked up the JTEC, which looks like this:




(The 1987 used a Electronic Spark Control, or ESC, module; 1988 and 1989, and possibly 1990 used the SMEC, which looks like a SBEC but has an extra connector; 1991 to 1995 used the SBEC; and 1996 picked up the JTEC.)

Oh okay, I didn't know if they where the same computer module or not, but I guess you learn something new everyday.

 

Next day off, I'm game.....Ive been chasing ghosts on my 96 for months now. Have changed every sensor under the hood along with many other things. Still will bog down/stall when attempting to accelerate then all of a sudden take off but stall again when pressing the accelerator.

 

I would try the easy fix, because my truck did the same thing before I zip tied that part. Hope this fixes your problem. Let me know how it goes

 

I have the same exact setup that you do (other than my pcm is silver where yours is black). I have on at least one attempt unplugged and reconnected all 3 of those connectors just to make sure they were in fact well seated and felt they were, But will check again.

I was doing many things that the truck did in fact need, but have still to fix the loss of power. Cranks and idles great, but when you go to give it gas it starts to stumble and stall but not die, Then all of a sudden will rev up and go just like a switch was flipped. Get it on the road, and can push the pedal to the floor but all it does is bog down.


What was it that finally got you searching in this area?
I see what looks like Duct tape residue on yours. Was this a prior attempt to maybe fix the problem, or was it that you got the truck in this condition and your fix was the zip tie.
