Hey all. The approaching winter has reminded me that he backing plates on my '93 are going to need replacing before too long. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find new ones for a decent price for an 8.25 axle? Only ones I can find are on eBay for around $100 apiece after shipping...used.

I don't want to go discs because I don't want to replace the master and proportioning valve. But I'd be open to upgrading my 9" brakes to 10". Cheaper the better. Thanks.

I found this new; The part number for this one is 5014128AB. The fitment guide on this new one shows it fits all the way up to 04 Dakota. That might increase your options for replacement with good used parts.

Thanks man, looks like that's for 11.5" drums though, which I certainly wouldn't be opposed to upgrading to, but I wonder if the bolt/rivet pattern is the same and I'd have to figure out parking brake cables.

 

Sorry I don't see where it said it was for 11.5" I thought I had it. Maybe contact them and ask? Looks like they will do a VIN search or answer questions. Son of a gun today it says the thing isn't compatible with a 93! It said it was when I posted it.

 

Yeah good idea I'll call around. Thanks brother I appreciate you looking. Might end up trying to get a 9.25 axle with drums and non rotted backing plates. In reality the plates should make it another 2 winters without trouble, but it irks me a bit that the only bit of rust left on the truck is these plates. These plates then the CV axles with split boots and I'll be happy with *almost* everything.

 

I have never seen a backing plate go bad on one of those trucks and that is with working on cars and trucks for a living for over 20 years plus owning 5 Dakotas of my own over the years.
Also there no such thing as a 11.5" drum. These years 9" was the most common with a few having had 10" rear brakes. Are you trying to measure the outside of the drum? Brakes are measured by the inside diameter of the drum.

you must not live where they salt the roads? Trust me, the backing plates are bad. It's got small rust holes in a couple places. Plenty of good steel still I don't consider it a safety issue yet but soon I want it done. The backing plates on my Subaru were even worse, not safe at all if it had drum brakes but they were only for the parking brake. I've seen it on some of the many other cars I've worked on as well, probably another 3 or 4 cars with rotted out backing plates.

I'm not measuring the drums. I know I have 9" brakes, my first post explicitly says that. The link above was for 11.5" brakes which I guess came on Rams and such.

 

Tbugden is correct. FWIW I have the same problem with my 87. The backing plates actually have rust holes through them. I eventually plan to try and put a ford explorer 8.8 rearend under mine. ( I already own it )
