I don't know enough about whether the swap could be done, but I've read the 4xRH and 4xRE have different overdrive units due to elimination of mechanical governer. The 4xRE has an electrical governor solenoid...the 4xRH is mechanical. You don't want to swap the JTEC with the SBEC...that's an ODBII computer for non, and that's a world of headaches. Take the 4xRE back and get a proper RH transmission.

If you have the time read over the FAQ page and get the build sheet. It takes about 10 days and you will have the list of everything installed at the factory. Are you replacing a broken tranny or just trying to upgrade?

Has anyone out there attempted this swap before?

no not really. I just bought kits bands and shift kits for a 96 and a 93 trans, kits are the same, box label says 90-97. As far as bolting up and going, any difference between a 94 and 95 trans will not affect that at all. Take that 96 tranny back and get one from a 92-95. Then bolt in, fill with fluid and drive the wheels off of it. Believe it or not there are a few parts within that transmission that fit all the way back to 1971 models!! Look up Sonnax, they make beef up and problem solving parts for many transmissions. Also look up transtar, that is who I get my rebuild parts from.

Volaredon, Well I looked and I can't find anything to prove my point except that in my 95FSM they used a different torque converter in 95 that is not compatible with older 42RH trans. I think maybe that is what I read about and was referring to in my post. There is a change in how the ports line up and you have to have the right TC for the 95 trans.

As a very long time fan of the 1991 to 1996 dakota, I have done just about every swap you can think of. My current truck, a hybrid with a 1994 body, 1991 frame, 1998 long block, 1993 trans, and 1994 wiring, is always apart for me to try something new. This swap CAN be done, but, the work involved isnt really worth it, since you would need to change the entire wiring harness, including engine, interior, and light wiring, the ECM, the gauge cluster, and several other small pieces. A few of the sensors on the OBD II trucks are also different, and you will play havoc chasing down which ones to replace to keep the CEL off, and make it run right. In about late july of 1995, they started switching the trucks over to OBD II, whereas yours is an OBD 1, and the two systems are NOT interchangeable. even though the harness connectors look the same, the wiring is actually set up a bit different. As others have said, it would be better to just get a 1992 (not 1991, they were very weak, as well as partially vacuum actuated, especially for the 4WD models) to early (June 1995) matching trans. It will make the swap much easier, and well as less hassles later on.

Heh.

No, completely different connectors.

JTEC (Jeep/Truck Electronic Controller) is a completely different component from the SBEC (Single Board Electronic Controller).

Here's a pic of the JTEC:

Here's a pic of the SBEC:

Credit to RockAuto for the pictures.

You can repin, but don't forget, there's the change from the OBD to the OBDII connector; there's the extra O2 sensors; and that's just off the top of my head.

If you read what i wrote, the connector i was talking about isnt the ECM connector, but, the bulkhead connector at the firewall. They look the same, so some might think they can just use the engine wiring harness and ECM from the 1996 truck, but, even though it will plug into the firewall connector, it wont work, because the connectors are the same, but, the pin placements, as well as the amount of wires going to the interior from the engine compartment are different.

Now I just got back from taking another transmission out of another dakota. It was the same year as mine (1994). I have it here in the garage and it looks to be different than the one I took out. The bell looks to be a little larger in girth and the input shaft is shorter. it has the 3 pin connector like mine and the same over all length. I got the torque out of this doner and it has 130 teeth on the starter ring where mine has 122 on it. What is up with truck from h*** HELP!!!
